New Covenant Presbyterians Build Chairs Together
New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Aiken organized a chair making project to furnish 400 oak chairs for its new sanctuary. Under Donald B. Byerley, 70 members worked seven hours daily for four months, aided by church women who upholstered all seats in 15 hours across three sessions. The project saved about $70 per chair versus store prices and mirrored the church’s mission to serve Jesus through communal labor and stewardship.

Dr. David Botstein of MIT calls the work elegant and historically significant.
