The South Carolina Supreme Court held a mistress may inherit a mar ried man’s possessions, striking down the 1795 law restricting mistresses’ share as discriminatory to women. Justice David Harwell stated coverture burdens no longer exist and the ruling stems from a 1979 Georgetown County case.
Allied Corp officials argue shifts in federal policy caused the failure of their South Carolina nuclear fuel reprocessing center and are confident of winning a $500 million lawsuit against the government. The suit, filed in 1964, claims the 1977 Carter ban on commercial reprocessing amounted to a federal seizure of property, with the plant mothballed in 1984 after failed bailout efforts.

Two major league baseball exhibitions canceled.
In Los Angeles, AP reports that France and Italy allegedly set pacts with Libya to grant terrorists safe passage in exchange for immunity from attacks on their citizens. The Times quotes an official noting prior French belief of ties between the PLO and Libyans. Deals collapsed after Libyan-based terrorists bombed Paris restaurants and attacked Rome. Reagan officials had learned of the deals last year.
