Washington AP reports wholesale prices fell for the fourth straight month in March by six tenths of a percent. Agricultural prices dropped sharply while industrial goods edged up only slightly according to the government release.
In Saigon military officials issued shoot to kill orders to curb protests as up to 50,000 Communist led forces massed 40 to 50 miles away. The city curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. was extended to 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Prosecutors in the John B. Connally bribery trial plan to present initial evidence after defense labeled star witness a liar and thief. Edward Bennett Williams said he would prove Connally's former friend Jake Jacobsen embezzled ten thousand dollars for himself.
County solicitor LaVaun Fox recalls his early career as an assault and battery warrant is issued by an unidentified magistrate in the Second Circuit. Eddie L. Buck 32, veteran coach in Tennessee and South Carolina, is named head football coach at Aiken High School. Buck comes from Bradley County High Cleveland Tennessee, after a long career at Richmond Academy Seneca and other schools. He is praised for program coordination and community engagement as he assumes duties in Area No. 1.
A near 30 degree local freeze is predicted tonight across western and north western South Carolina with patchy frost possible in poorly drained areas. Forecasters warn the state's $30 million peach crop could be at risk while winds may limit frost. Tomorrow warms to the 60s with a drying trend later in the week and recent rainfall noted at Bush Field. A flood closure occurred on Richland Avenue W near the University Bypass.
Aiken County Board of Commissioners have not started a search to replace former head Thomas F. Williams. They consider a candidate from within the county, though no names or meeting dates have been set. Commissioner Ralph F. Cullinan says the public who pushed Williams to resign should drive the process.
U S Senator Strom Thurmond and South Carolina Senator Gilbert McMillan spoke at an Aiken Chamber forum about deficit spending and government waste. Thurmond criticized a $24 billion tax rebate as risking inflation. McMillan warned of rising bond issues and a potential $100 million shortfall in next year’s budget.
The United States Air Force jazz unit Airmen of Note will perform in Aiken on Wednesday May 7 at 8 p.m. at Virginia Acres Activities Building. Admission is free but tickets must be requested from the Aiken Standard, with a mail order coupon to follow. Count Basie praises the group, tracing its lineage to 1942 and Glenn Miller’s era.
