Legislature Narrowly Backs Tax Settlement And School Pay Reforms
The Senate approved a tax settlement with the Southern Railway Company by 24 to 8 after executive sessions and skepticism from several members. Debate highlightedAttorney General guidance concerns and the belief that the state should recover a definite amount through court if needed. A House bill from the education committee proposes salary increases for teachers under the 6 0 1 plan, with schedules tied to degree and position, aiming to save over a half million dollars. The highway commission advanced paving and surface treatment plans affecting routes through Edgefield, Johnston, Aiken, and nearby towns, including toll bridge actions and anticipated work on Route 1 5 and Route 26 corridors.
