Columbia Parks Go Online Public Access Initiative

Columbia residents will gain online access at city parks with at least three computers in each of 15 parks. Mayor Bob Coble said the aim is to teach computer skills essential in a high tech world. More than 150 donated computers from individuals and firms are being prepared by Midlands Technical College students and staff. seven machines have been installed across four parks.

Hitchcock Woods easement granted to protect urban wilderness

After years of effort, an easement on Hitchcock Woods is granted to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Tim Simmons, chair of the Hitchcock Foundation, says the move preserves the land as natural green space for Aiken residents. Former chair John Seabrook notes the easement fulfills a 58 year old aim by the Hitchcock family and foundation to keep the area in perpetuity. The Woods, bequeathed to the people of Aiken, is the nation’s largest urban wilderness. Five years earlier, officials eyed selling 500 adjacent acres, which the foundation then purchased for preservation and protection.

Murder clues sought in fatal Sunday shooting near Muddy Branch Road

Cecil Wayne Renew, 44, was found shot multiple times behind the wheel of his pickup on Muddy Branch Road near Interstate 20. Investigators work nonstop as the autopsy plan remains pending. Renew had been named in a January warrant for receiving stolen goods related to a Fleetwood Travel Trailer valued over $5,000.

Graham Seeks Allies to Secure Savannah River Site Future

U.S. Rep. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina meets with local leaders and John Boehner in Aiken to rally support for the Savannah River Site.
