Cleveland Bailey returned home to find his house razed by a city contractor after the wrong owner was notified. Mayor Hays apologized and urged Bailey to itemize losses totaling about 50 thousand dollars for house, furniture, clothes, and appliances. The city had condemned the home last year and authorized razing if standards were not met. Bailey had planned 5000 dollars for roof and repairs.

Most Americans have moved clocks forward one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday restoring daylight saving time. A few states remain exempt from the change. Daylight time will stay in effect until October 29.
The Savannah River Plant’s contractor change will cost the federal government about 85 million dollars as Westinghouse takes over from Du Pont. DOE officials note Westinghouse estimates 33.6 million and Du Pont 30.9 million in transition expenses, with total near 64.5 million so far and a possible 30 to 35 million more. Westinghouse Savannah River Co. projects 33,585,523 in transition costs. James S. Moore, WSRC president, will discuss the company’s role at a 1:30 p.m. Monday press conference on site.
USC Aiken senior Grant Larlee steered Cloonty to a 2:06 mile in the third leg of Aiken’s Triple Crown at the Aiken Mile Track. He overtook rivals Dance Pavillion and Probationer to win the Harry Whitney Memorial race with Slinky Yankee and Dance Pavillion following. Larlee, a finance major at USCA, called it a family business and expressed intent to pursue horses further.
A Du Pont severance payout to about 6,500 Savannah River Plant employees could total 64 to 65 million dollars with up to 15 million more for vacation time cashouts. Banks offered high CD rates as dealers and real estate agents anticipated continued brisk business. The Savannah River Plant Credit Union reported long lines of 80 people at a time as workers rushed to access funds.
Authorities pursue a man suspected of fatally shooting Gilbert Nickie Bostick Jr. in Wagener. Police and SLED used bloodhounds and a large turnout of officers to trail the suspect across swamp and farmland after gunfire erupted in a yard. The fugitive, identified as David Jay Oliver, remains at large as officers search for motive and location.
