Zoning Board Grants Variance Over Financial Hardship Claim
The Aiken Zoning Board of Adjustments approved two variances for Ronnie Bolton's Kalmia Landing project under the new PUD ordinance. Bolton argued financial hardship could cost between 2 million and 3 million dollars if denied. One variance allowed 12 condo units per building instead of eight. the other reduced minimum spacing between buildings from 15 to five feet. The 12-unit vote passed 4-1, with Beverly Williams warning the project could be jeopardized if the unit increase failed. The city opposed reducing space for fire safety concerns. The item was initially denied 3-2 before being split for separate votes.
