Brooklyn Woman Vanishes After Goodbye Kiss

Mrs Eleanor O Keefe, wife of Brooklyn leader Thomas O Keefe, kissed him goodbye on Sept 11 and vanished after saying she would go shopping. A note said she would never return. Police search underway with a brother in Buffalo and sisters in Grand Rapids notified.

State Fair Crowds Strain Pontiac Provisions

Large crowds at the Michigan State Fair caused shortages of butter milk and eggs as food stalls ran dry. Gov Bliss planned a speech and officials eyed a big turnout for state fair operations and elections. Detroit visitors arrived by special car amid weather challenges and a lively racing program highlighted by a Bay City hose cart vs Pontiac wagon duel. The state board of agriculture met in Detroit with another session planned.

Michigan Briefs Report on Local Civic and Legal Matters

A citizens committee is formed to attract a tanning factory to Brighton with an $8000 cost. Charles Geet is found guilty in Port Huron of scalding his elderly wife, leaving her badly burned. William Gray, a Pere Marquette brakeman, is charged in Saginaw with cashing six to ten company checks and is jailed in Pontiac. A sanity hearing is ordered for Mrs Lizzie French of Onondaga after an alleged poisoning attempt, set for next Monday. The Presbyterian synod of Michigan will convene in Niles October 8 to 10, including most of the state with 32000 members. Dr J W Medeckin of Saginaw is gravely ill after postmortem complications involving a surgical needle with gangrenous substance at the Woman's Hospital. In Lansing, trials are set next Monday for B J Adams, W A French and C H Pratt on a grand jury indictment about an alleged attempt to frame the legislature in 1899. Galesburg adds a two-wheeled chemical fire engine to its port facilities. a gasoline engine powers a hydrant water supply for downtown.

Three Rivers Schools Closed Over Smallpox Case

In Three Rivers Michigan on September 26 the city shut the high school as a smallpox case surfaced. A tenth grade student in the first ward was diagnosed and others in the family across first third and ninth grades were vaccinated. Officials expect containment to one case.

Factory Plant Slipping Into Benton Harbor Canal

The Cothydlinkiey fruit package plant in Jolby-Hinkley is sliding into the Benton Harbor ship canal as dredging by government crews erodes dockage along the canal. Buildings have been vacated and much property is lost due to collapse of the canal edges.

Witnesses in Schley court reveal Cotton and Wise roles

Washington report notes Admiral Cotton and Capt Wise testifying as new witnesses in the Schley court. Cotton described dispatches he allegedly carried to Admiral Schley aboard the Brooklyn on May 27, revealing which messages he believed Schley should possess. Wise testified about signaling that Cervera was inside Santiago harbor, a claim later ruled out. During the day Admiral Schley announced he selected Mr Rayner as chief of counsel to succeed Judge Wilson.
