Born in Niles Ohio 1843 he served as private and lieutenant in the Twenty Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Fought at South Mountain and Antietam, rose from commissary sergeant to lieutenant, later captain. Brevetted major in 1863. Studied law, practiced in Warren, elected Stark County prosecutor 1869, served in Congress starting 1876, Ohio governor 1892, president 1896, re nominated 1900, shot 1901. Also notes a testimonial for White Wine Syrup.
A gunman wounded President McKinley during a public reception in Buffalo at the Temple of Music on the Pan American exposition. The assassin was seized as crowds cheered and police contained the mob. The president underwent emergency surgery after a bullet lodged near the breastbone was removed.
The would be assassin, Leon Czolgosz, claimed anarchist duty as he shot the president at the Pan American exposition. He signed a six page confession naming Emma Goldman as influence, denied confederates, and said he became involved through her writings. The president, guarded by detectives, was calm and exposed only briefly before anesthetic surgery began to remove the bullet.
Buffalo notes at Milburn House report the doctors consulting at 10 30 AM with consideration of using X ray to locate a bullet in the abdomen if located another attempt to extract it will follow. Czolgosz shows no remorse for his crime.
Telegram report notes Dr Park says McKinley’s chances are fair after bullet wound found lodged in back muscles amid inflamed tissue. Threat of blood poisoning looms if infection develops, but no vital parts harmed and physicians remain encouraged.
Mrs Mary McKenzie widow of Hawkins McKenzie died at 1:30 this morning at her daughter Mrs Eugene Harrison's home in Wauson. Age about 76. Sister of Charles and George Walker and sister-in-law of S D McKenzie. Former resident of 153 West Maumee Adrian. Funeral from daughter’s home Monday. body to Morenci for burial.
Justice H. B. Dunbar arraigned for stealing a horse and buggy from Palace livery. He waived examination, bound over to the October term of the circuit court, bail set at 8500, and remanded to jail. Winifred Cramerworth faced justice for horn stealing, waived examination, bound over to October term, bail not posted, remains jailed.
