Russians Suffer Further Setbacks Before Stalingrad

The Associated Press reports Moscow dispatches as German assaults toward Stalingrad are halted at approaches to the Volga city while Soviet forces retreat in the southwest toward Novorossisk. A Russian anti aircraft battery near Stalingrad halted 50 German tanks before nightfall, losing 17 tanks but holding its position and later being relieved by reinforcements. Hungarian and Romanian divisions move east amid intensified front fighting.

Kanzler Takes Key WPB Post in War Production

Ernest C. Kanzler, Michigan automotive expert, named director general for operations of the War Production Board. He will oversee about 40 industry and materials branches and priorities and allocations matters, succeeding Amery Houghton who resigns to avoid embarrassment from a federal court anti trust conviction. Kanzler, formerly Ford production chief, rises from WPB Detroit region director to one of wartime production’s top roles.

Band postpones Riverside Park concert due to weather

Manufacturers' sales tax urged to raise treasury revenue

Madison Delinquent School Tax Collect Authorized

The Adrian school board last evening authorized Superintendent George H. Little to collect 2278 dollars in delinquent school taxes held by the Madison township board. The taxes were levied before Madison was severed from Adrian in 1933. The board argues the funds benefit Madison pupils, while others urge reintegration with Adrian. Also approved August bans of 2132.75 and three teacher contracts.

Chinese Retake Key Towns Near Canton and Kiangsu Border

Chinese dispatches say Lupao northwest of Canton was recaptured from Japan, a vital highway and river center. Guerrillas also reoccupied towns along the Kiangsu Anhwei border in August. Japanese losses include many men and large puppet troop desertions. At one town over 800 puppet troops shifted to Chinese side after revolting and killing Japanese overlords.

Price Ceiling Violators Cited in Nationwide Campaign

The Office of Price Administration said it will file actions in federal courts in 48 cities today against more than 100 meat packers and wholesalers for price ceiling violations on beef and veal. Cases focus on upgrading inferior meat to higher grade prices, issuing incorrect invoices, and failing to issue invoices, with injunctions sought to enforce regu­lations.

British RAF raids mark third anniversary of war in Rhineland

A strong RAF force bombed the upper Rhineland centered on Karlsruhe with large fires and smoke reported up to 8000 feet. Eight bombers were missing. British dispatches said bombs hit several places left of the Rhine, while another raid targeted industrial midlands. No casualties reported.
