Labor Day weekend deaths total 488 nationwide

Labor Day weekend 1947 saw 488 Americans die in traffic and weather related accidents. Michigan counted 24 fatalities with Lenawee County reporting no accident deaths. Thunderstorms caused trees to fall and power outages across Hillsdale and Branch counties, with Quincy suffering roof and infrastructure damage.

Two Adrianites Die in U P Car Crash

In Mackinac and Chippewa counties near St Ignace four people died during Labor Day weekend. Victims include A O Budd 45 of Adrian Mich and his wife Alma who perished when their car crossed a guard rail on the Cut River bridge. Driver Dewey Smith and his wife Cora of Adrian were injured and hospitalized with head and limb injuries described as fair.

Adrian Public Schools Reopen For About 3000 Pupils

Adrian public schools prepare for a new term with about 3000 students expected. High school classes start at 8 30 a m and grade schools at 9 00 a m. Superintendent George H Little notes overcrowding relief from moving students to Jefferson McKinley and Washington schools. Parochial schools open Thursday and area colleges set fall terms in September.

Bolt of Lightning Ignites Clayton Area Barn Fire

Lightning struck an electric transformer near the Philip Kindinger farm barn three and a half miles north of Clayton, triggering a fire with an estimated ten thousand dollar loss. The Kindinger family was away at Wamplers lake. Marion Goodrock spotted the blaze and alerted Addison fire department. The barn, 30 tons of hay, a soybeans bin and two oats bins were lost, partially insured. Lightning also hit a nearby Goodlack barn four miles NW of Clayton, tearing shingles but causing no fire.

Three Men Fined for Drunk Driving Plea

Three men pleaded guilty to drunk driving before Justice John K. Lowe. Donald DeFay 35 of 205 Locust Street paid 60 dollars fine and 7.65 costs. Kenneth Ansley 32 of Clayton paid 60 dollars and 87 cents costs. Ralph Ansley 30 of Route 1 Ray Indiana faced similar fines. Each man had ten day jail sentences suspended for ten days after arrest following a minor Beecher Street accident.

Men Arrested in Stolen Car on Palmyra Road

Two men Buck Williams 34 of Toledo and Donald A Dickey 25 with unknown address were arrested by sheriff’s officers Saturday morning after driving an unsafe manner in a car reported stolen from Dexter Michigan. They were booked at the jail following a Saturday afternoon radio report of the theft.

Speedboat Upends Rowboat Off Devils Lake Injuring Fishermen

Ohio couple Mr and Mrs Robert Meyer of Toledo were jailed after their 16 foot inboard speedboat rammed a rowboat carrying fishermen Homer Price and Leland Snyder off Echo Cove Devils Lake at 1030 am Monday. Meyer faces operating a motor boat while drunk while Mrs Meyer is charged with drunkenness. The rowboat capsized and Price drifted unable to swim until help arrived. Fishermen reported the speedboat ran with throttle open and damaged tackle worth over 50 dollars. The Meyers and their dog were detained after attempts to depart and the ignition key was removed by rescuers.

State Liquor Board seeks bargain sale of war stock

Lansing Sept 2 The State Liquor Control Commission asked the State Administrative Board for permission to conduct a bargain sale valued at 53 500 000 of slow moving wartime liquor shortages. About 142 items totaling 113 000 cases will be sold at reduced prices through all outlets starting in October after 30 days notice. The state expects a net profit of 7 000 000 in the long run, despite an estimated 152 000 loss on the sales themselves. Items include whiskies brandies rums cordials liqueurs and wines.

Too Much War Talk Says New Legion Chief O'Neil

James F. O'Neil, new American Legion commander and Manchester New Hampshire police chief, said there is too much war talk and not enough peace talk. He warned war talk is overstated yet danger must not be overlooked and advocated reliance on the United Nations. He compared Communism to a submerged iceberg and suggested education or a constitutional amendment to curb it, while noting democracy must be tested to defeat Communism. Winnipeg area train crash kills at least 35

A west bound vacation train collided with a standing passenger train at Dugald near Winnipeg injuring 15 and killing at least 35. Rescue workers recovered 17 bodies and investigators said some remains buried in charred wreckage. Gaye Lewis age 64 of Transcona and Mrs Albert Simpson of Winnipeg died en route to hospitals.
