Walter W. Cobb and G. W. Shields of Kankakee relay a Hudson Bay story from Moose Factory that two white men were found dead 900 miles north in a broken balloon basket and buried by Indians. The tale concerns the missing explorer Andree and two companions, though no corroborating evidence was offered.
A severe rainstorm and flash flood crippled Cleveland with up to a million dollars in property damage. The eastern districts bore the worst impact as eight miles long by a mile and a half wide flooded, isolating residents and prompting lifeboats and river rescue crews to extract families.
