Demonstration in Santiago Urges Lower Cuban Sugar and Tobacco Duties

Upward of 8 090 men from all sectors of Santiago answered a chamber of commerce appeal to attend a demonstration urging Cuba to press the United States for reduced American duties on Cuban sugar and tobacco. The event paused all business as Senor Marcane spoke to a large crowd in the Plaza about the looming impact on planters. Lieut. Whitehead wired the memorial to Gov. America’s cup race a dramatic second victory by Columbia

In New York on October 4 the Columbia defeated Shamrock II in the second America's Cup race. The course covered 30 miles with Columbia winning by 3 minutes 35 seconds and overall faster than any Cup race. Captain Barr led the British Shamrock with Sir Thomas in defeat but sporting.
