Inspector General Fred W. Green of Grand Rapids and Major B O Newell of Jackson inspected Adrian Light Guard Company 4 amid factional tensions with Captain M C Bond. They canvassed local business leaders, met with Bond and the unit, seized state property for safekeeping, and will return next week to review finances and moral issues before any blame.
A serious accident occurred about 80 rods north of Cadmus on Woaneeday. Mrs Horatio Swords and her daughter Miss Florence were thrown from a carriage when a horse blanketed by a hog-drive collapsed the vehicle. Mrs Swords suffered a broken nose and Florence a possible collarbone injury. Both were bruised but progressing toward recovery.
Adrian hosts a large contingent of traveling salesmen and company reps who drive local wealth. Names include W. J. Luck Billy, Chas Johnston, Julian Kinzel, W. F. Ayers, Thomas Robinson, Seymour Critchel, Will Curtis, L. A. Dewey, W. A. Howland, E. Q. Dersham and many others across Ohio Michigan Indiana Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota and beyond. The group includes agents for Bond Post Co. Lamb Fence Co. Simpson Scythe Koppert Moloher and several furniture and hardware firms, with spouses and families among many.
F G Cooley arrived Friday for an eight day furlough from the training ship Hartford now at Brooklyn yard for repairs. He is a clarinet artist in the ship band of 16 under Charles W Jackson. Cooley and brother F J Cooley enlisted September 20 1899 in San Francisco. The Hartford has sailed and trained overseas twice, visiting Gravesend Norway Denmark Sweden Portugal Madeira St Thomas Porto Rico and Boston. A rough return voyage included storms and a broken boiler prompting repairs and 500 crew aboard 300 novices awaiting training. He plans another six month Mediterranean tour after visiting Jackson and Woodstock before New York trip.
The circuit court jury returned a verdict for the Lake Shore Railway Co. in the Mary Hyatt case after a trial over injuries from a collision at the South Main Street crossing. Damages claimed were $5,000. Corbett v American Screen Door Co. was continued. Court adjourned to November 30. Evelyn Abbott, Greek historian and Ralph College fellow, died at 58 with paralysis limiting his work after graduation.
Mrs Henry Bowen hosted a Friday afternoon card party on Deanis street with nine tables of six handed pedro all ladies present and no gentlemen. Mrs Leslie B Robertson won the bet prize and Mrs W A Staniford took the consolation. Out of town guests included Mrs A H Smith and Mrs Q McCormick of Cleveland and others. The young people's BYP U held a social and supper in the church parlors with pancakes and maple syrup for top dressing served by the men, about 100 attendees.
Marion Le Shirley known as Detroit matron from the Way Down East company seeks divorce from Harry W. Forbush. The case is docketed in the New York Supreme Court. She accuses infidelity since January 1893 naming six co-respondents. Forbush, employed at Conrad Tanning Co., resides at Herald Square Hotel. No children. Shirley appears in court with Way Down East.
A company of about thirty gathered at N. A. S. Hamilton's east of the city Friday to surprise Lynn Hamilton on his eighteenth birthday. The evening featured games and a rapid pace, ending with a generous repast. From the city, Miss Myttie Nash, Vic Nash, and James Nash attended.
The electric road project from Toledo to Adrian faces delays. Officials expected to announce a Sunday excursion to Toledo, but material shortages halt rail laying for two days. The grading is finished and bridges ready, yet rails, ties, and wire are unavailable. Completion now not anticipated before next Saturday night.
The Young Man's Society of St John’s held a social evening at St John’s school hall. The menu featured coffee bread sandwiches chicken salad celery cake and pie. James organized the event and the attendees, nearly the entire membership, enjoyed the gathering and declared success.
Carl B. Steele, son of Mr and Mrs Geo W Steele of 1210 South Atria Toledo, died after a short illness at his home on South Street. The funeral was held from the home Thursday afternoon at 2 30. Rev W B Hormel, pastor of the Third Presbyterian Church, conducted the services. Interment followed.
Carl B Steele, born December 11, 1991 in Marshall Michigan, would have turned ten on his next birthday. Described as loving and obedient, he attended Sabbath school, was faithful in the Piru Presbyterian Church Sabbath school in Adrian, Michigan, and was well known there.
Adrian through her townsmen El mer Smith of N. Smith & Son leads again at the Kansans City display. Mr Smith Swanning wins a $200 prize in the Relatedling Rape contest open to growers, with the white chrysanthemum named convention hall chrysanthemum exhibiting to-day downtown.
At the L A O B hall near Wald by and Clay's bank a Thursday night gathering featured a four-handed Pedro game across sixteen tables. Prizes were decided by a cut for four players Miss Maggie McLaughlin Miss Needmeir Frank Epple and John White with White winning a silk sofa pillow. Epple took second for a Jardinier and the ladies plan another event soon.
The temperance people of Tecumseh will hold a union temperance meeting Sunday evening. Rev. Fred W. Corbett of this city has been invited by local pastors and accepted to deliver an address on temperance.
The Assembly Thursday evening event by Misa Anderson attracted fewer attendees than usual due to the same time clashing with the showing of "The Prince of Egypt" and many regulars were at the cinema. The gathering proceeded smoothly despite the lower turnout.
The White Rose Pleasure Club held a lively Friday evening event with about seventy five couples in attendance. Kaiser's fall orchestra provided the music for a very enjoyable party.
The Degree of Honor members enjoyed the regular meeting Friday evening with games and social converse, celebrating fellowship and friendly good humor within the group.
The second performance of The Prince of Egypt replicated the prior show’s reception with the Indies and other participants delivering polished, pleasing scenes. Florence Johnson received carnations, A W Smith a white net, and Harry Armstrong a pink carnation bouquet. Afterward the company met at Everies hall for a buffet luncheon. Total ticket sales reached 506.50 with Kellogg drawing 40 percent gross. Kellogg’s share was 201.90. expenses are still being calculated, promising a nice surplus for the society.
The Detroit Southers announce excursion tickets at one and one third fare for round trips on November 27 and 28 with a return limit of November 29.
