Lenawee Patriotic League War Chest Reaches 28558

The Lenawee Patriotic League war chest totals 28558 with Hudson reporting 2552 collected to date. Business and professional groups contributed 1160, industrial workers 998, residential canvass 380, and Hudson schools 114. George Haskins said fundraising continues and figures are current.

Rent Registration Opens Tuesday in Lenawee County

Lenawee county will open a rent control office Tuesday in Adrian at the Masonic Temple building per James T. Bolan. Landlords and hoteliers must file rent registration certificates with the March 1 ceiling rentals due by December 15, with forms available in Adrian city hall and local post offices. Registration requires triplicate or duplicate copies, with tenant copies mailed after review.

Lenawee county draftees head to Detroit for induction

The first November group of Lenawee county registrants leaves Adrian for Detroit for final physicals and possible Army induction. Seventeen to twenty men board trains at 9:08 p.m. after roll call at the Annis-Fint American Legion post. additional draftees recently departed for Fort Custer aboard a box car train.

Hitler vows to strike back as war drags on

In Munich on the anniversary of the 1923 Putsch, Adolf Hitler pledged to retaliate against American forces in North Africa and promised not to flee Germany. He dismissed British gains in Egypt as minor, urged faith, and warned that the final word would come from Germany, not Roosevelt.

Airlifted troops spearhead Buna Gona push in New Guinea

In New Guinea on November 9 American jungle trained troops began a bold air move from Australia to the Buna Gona coast, marking the largest infantry air transfer in U S history. Michigan soldiers led the assault with Corp Edward Raile of Charlevoix among the first ashore, as officers J Shirley and DeBoer also landed and the force pressed inland through rugged terrain toward the Japanese positions.

Nazi war machine dealt another blow

Allied air forces struck Germany's war machine in occupied France with strong raids on Lille locomotive works and Abbeville airfield. Flying Fortresses and Allied fighters faced heavy German opposition, with losses reported on both sides. RAF bombers also hit Genoa in a heavy night raid, while Brest submarine base endured further attacks. Canadian escort squadrons supported the operations over France.

House blocks extra year training for teenage draftees

Washington notes that the House refused to record support for a Senate plan to require one year of training for drafted teens before combat. A Rankin amendment to lower the draft age from 20 to 18 was defeated in conferee instructions. Red Tanks Break Up Nazi Attacks Near Nalchik

Soviet mid day communique says Russian tank crews repelled German assaults near the Nalchik region in harsh Caucasus weather. In three days of fighting a German infantry battalion was wiped out in one sector with 1,700 Nazi deaths reported overall. At Stalingrad area fighting remained small scale with artillery duels and German infantry losses around 200. A Soviet air raid at a German airdrome destroyed 20 planes, and five days on that front saw 670 German soldiers killed by snipers.

Japanese Radio Calls African Landing Illegal
