Four youths plead guilty in Wabash wreck case

Audey Craig 18 Milan township Robert W Miller 19 Petersburg and Carl David Burguard 18 Petersburg pleaded guilty before Judge G Arthur Rathbun in circuit court to malicious destruction of property tied to wrecking a 1942 automobile on a Wabash railroad crossing east of Adrian. Donald Logan 20 Petersburg was arraigned and held for further exam.

County War Chest Totals 24721 in Lenawee Drive

Lenawee county's war relief funds reached 24721 today with new gifts from industrial plants and groups. The largest single gift was 3570 from Gerity Adrian Manufacturing employees. others include 300 from Adrian Lodge BPOE, 129 from Cutler Dickerson employees, 1050 and 643 from various manufacturers and Ehringer Palmyra workers. The Patriotic League released a summary showing 18760 Industrial Workers Adrian, 817 Palmyra workers, 1989 business groups, 1975 manufacturers gifts, 541 residential, 428 schools, 211 clubs. Willis Moore of Adrian township noted 149 from ten families in district Six Fractional, all in this community.

Calling All Women Old Stockings Needed War effort drive

Women are urged to donate worn silk and nylon stockings to support war materials. Adrian salvage committee led by Arthur Palmer asks retailers to provide collection containers for discarded hosiery, washed prior to shipment to Green Island New York. Silk stockin gs are required for powder bags and nylon for other war materials.

Clinton Man Killed in Traffic Accident

Clinton man Peter A. Carney aged 48 was killed when his car collided with a truck trailer driven by Fred Hohenberger of Pittsford at a detour intersection of US 112 and a country road two miles north of Clinton. He was thrown from the car and a rear wheel passed over him. Carney, a World War I veteran and American Legion member, never married and is survived by a brother in Lincoln Nebraska and two sisters in Syracuse Indiana and Jackson Michigan. The funeral is Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at House Funeral Home with burial in Brookside cemetery.

Former Adrian Man Dies After B&O Accident

Edward Robert Ferguson of Plymouth Ohio aged 21 died in Willard Hospital after a railroad accident Wednesday noon while a fireman on the Baltimore and Ohio line. He stuck his head from the cab window and was struck by a passing freight train fracturing his skull and rendering him unconscious. He lived in Adrian until two years ago and graduated from Adrian High School in 1935. He is survived by his mother Mrs Ehrbright widow Ruth Merie Van Zandt and a 60-year-old son Robert Edwin Ferguson. His body was brought to the Everiss Funeral Home with funeral arrangements to be announced.

Last night youths whitewashed streets sidewalks and property in Adrian to spur interest in the Adrian Monroe football game. Officials say the damage extended beyond sidewalks including a car, storefronts and a church display, with some windows smeared and hydrants marked. Teachers say groups confined to streets and sidewalks. property owners to clean and a car wash will be arranged. In Lansing, Ben Bernstein, a 76 year old ex Detroit resident jailed for life for second degree murder, is set for release within two weeks under the 1941 parole bill after a state parole board hearing.

Body identified as Steven Wilczynski found on Lake Michigan beach

The body of Steven Wilczynski, 47, a Chicago care-maker, was recovered from a Lake Michigan beach four miles south of here. Identification was confirmed by an International Harvester Co. badge and Chicago Missing Persons records.

Americans Launch Two Pronged Attack At Guadalcanal

American forces on Guadalcanal pushed a five pronged drive, penetrating a western flank and threatening another while killing 350 Japanese and seizing 12 37MM guns, three field pieces, and 30 machine guns. The westward assault advanced two miles into jungle as Japanese reinforcements arrived east of the airfield. Meanwhile Allied pressure in New Guinea pushed the enemy back toward Port Moresby and Buna as bombers hit targets in Timor and Salamaua. Naval ships shelled Guadalcanal at Kokumbona, and Army planes continued strikes on Japanese troops and dumps. An appeal for a coordinated south Pacific command was voiced by New Zealand’s Walter Nash.

U-Boat Becomes A Hospital Ship In Pacific Action

A US submarine operating in the South Pacific has been declared a hospital ship after five crew members performed an emergency appendectomy on a patient with a 106 degree fever. The operation took two and a half hours and the patient is convalescing. The medical team included a pharmacist's mate who had prior operation experience, the executive officer, and two machinist’s mates. The incident is described in a letter from Lieut.
