Seek Vote Monday on New Tax Plan
Washington May 23 Treasury and congressional tax experts moved to have the House Ways and Means Committee vote Monday on a pay as you go income tax plan excluding casual and domestic labor. The plan would withhold 10 percent from taxable income and from dividends and interest to ease collections and curb inflation. A single man over 11 dollars a week and a married man with one dependent above 146 dollars a month would be taxed at the 10 percent rate with deductions offsetting the March 15 tax due. The committee recessed as internal revenue chief Guy Helvering said 12 000 more workers would be needed to handle the checks and counter checks of withholding.

May Use Prisoner's Gasoline Formula
Albany May 23. A life prisoner whose sentence was commuted may aid the nation’s armed forces by a gasoline saving invention. Lowell Landers of Nashville Tennessee, a Black inventor, claims a combustion engine that cuts gasoline cost from 22 to three cents a gallon.
