Associated Press reports German divisions probing near Kharkov while Soviet forces gain fresh ground around the Donets Basin. Berlin claims Kerch Peninsula victory is near total, but Moscow says battles continue near Kerch and Izyum-Barvenkova front.
Adrian merchants at a large Chamber of Commerce meeting voted to keep closing stores Thursday afternoons during June July and August. The group discussed Memorial Day and Independence Day closures and decided to remain closed on both holidays. Since the holidays fall on Saturday this year they will stay open Friday night.
London May 20 an official source said Allied air commands plan rapid expansion to enable 1000 aircraft nightly against German targets. The source noted current capacity for 800 raids can be increased and Britain’s air base capacity has room to grow. The objective is to reach 1000 bombers on clear nights with good weather.
Approximately 35 Adrian College seniors will receive diplomas at the 82nd annual commencement Sunday afternoon June 7. The class entered with 62 students in September 1938. Activities begin May 29 with investiture. formal parties and receptions follow through June 6. The baccalaureate service is June 7 in the college chapel with Dr. Harry W. McPherson as speaker.

Mrs Johnston argued Polly’s fixed habits demand sugar as the bird consumes three cups coffee daily with each meal and cannot be without sugar. The Lenswee rationing board granted a pet sugar allocation under a special rule, enabling one pound of sugar per month for Polly.

Two hundred eighty Lenawee county rural students will receive eighth grade diplomas Friday afternoon at the First Baptist Church of Adrian. The event begins at 1 30 pm with C K Little delivering the commencement address on Things Worth While.
Five bus loads of Lenawee county men leave Adrian tonight at 8 for induction into the Army in Detroit. The Adrian High School band will lead to the bus station at 7:40 if weather allows, otherwise band members meet at the station. About 1,000 people are expected for the farewell at the Lenawee draft board. The men register at the armory at 6:30, board buses for Detroit, spend the night at a hotel, then report to the Detroit induction station early Thursday.
The Adrian YWCA marks 50 years with 225 attendees at a gymnasium celebration. Charter members from early 90s, past and present directors, widows honored, and remarks by William J. Cameron of Ford Motor Company framed a program recalling association history.
Washington May 20 The House Ways and Means Committee agreed to raise the normal income tax rate from 4 to 6 percent and to seek $2.75 billion more in revenue. Surtax plans were not disclosed but are expected to rise sharply with the first bracket. The panel also weighed giving Morgenthau authority to collect up to 10 percent of taxable income in advance via salary deductions to ease large future tax payments.

Promoted Washington May 20 Captain James Roosevelt son of the President has been selected for temporary promotion to major in the Marine Corps. The announcement lists 310 captains promoted and notes 11 officers now believed captured. Included are Captains Frank Cunningham Tharin of Washington DC and Herbert C Frueler of Orinda California, pilots from Wake Island. Tharin shared credit with Captain Henry T Elrod for sinking a Japanese light cruiser.
London report says a French fighter attacked a British Catalina flying boat over the Mediterranean about 20 miles north of Algiers on Monday. The crew of two were wounded and reportedly picked up by a British ship.
Michigan resort and tourist sectors fear gasoline rationing as a July 1 start date looms. British bombers hit Mannheim in western Germany in a heavy night strike aimed at war production sites including Badische Anilin and Daimler-Benz works. St Nazaire in occupied France also endured a strong raid as weather limited defenses and German losses were reported.
