Henry W Middleton of Dover Dies at 73

Henry W Middleton 73 longtime farmer and businessman died at his Dover township home after a long illness. Born November 9 1858 he spent his life in the area and held roles with Commercial Savings Bank Lenawee county road commission and fair executive committee. Surviving are wife Nettie A Wirt two daughters Willard Cole Adrian and Mrs Clarence Emerson Findlay and Onsted siblings and two grandchildren. Funeral at noon Thursday at the home with burial in Dover Center cemetery conducted by Rev George L Johnston Church of the Nazarene.

Poppy Day Sale Sets Local Record At $5644.62

The William C. Stark Auxiliary of the American Legion collected 5644.62 from the memorial poppy sale, the largest city total yet. About 5,000 flowers were sold by Saturday evening. chairman Mrs. Budd Goodwin said another thousand could have sold. Junior members won prizes for sales, and poppy posters by local students earned state contest entries. Proceeds aid soldiers’ welfare if wartime needs arise.

Lenawee county Army draft quota will depart Adrian tomorrow night for induction in Detroit Thursday morning. The large group reports at the armory at 6 30 p m for final registration and departs by bus at 8 00. They arrive in Detroit shortly after 10 and spend the night at a hotel.

Army Bombers Halt Eruption At Mauna Loa

Army bombers were flown to Hawaii to halt a two week Mauna Loa eruption that had dimmed Hilo streets. The lava wall six feet high and half a mile wide stopped May 13 after a bombing run begun May 2 to collapse lava tubes feeding the flow toward the city.

Adrift in Adrian Car Theft Suspects Sought

Michigan authorities hunt three about 17 after car, wrist watch and pocket book were stolen from Alfred W. Cameron in Adrian. He was found dazed at Broad and Maumee Streets around 2:30 pm and later recalled hitchhikers drove him to a beer parlor, then vanished. Cameron, 25, was jailed briefly. $13 in his pocketbook.
