The Office of Price Administration set ceilings on cost of living goods in nearly two million U S retail outlets, mandating March level prices. Adrian merchants report few markdowns, widespread stock checks, and signs posting ceilings, with cuts mainly to margins in some items.
Washington reports a mass launch of 30 merchant vessels Friday as part of the Maritime Commission’s two ships per day program. Emory Land said no delays, aiming to build about 3,200 ships totaling 23 million deadweight tons over 1942 and 1943. White House says shipyards delivered 12 5 ships in 130 days, 20 percent ahead of 1941, with Liberty ships shortening delivery to 105 days. Portland set for two records with keels and launches as soon as 60 and 30 days respectively.
Settlement ends a brief shutdown on the Panhandle Eastern pipeline in southeastern Michigan. International Hod Carriers Union Local 1191 workers receive a 10 to 20 cent hourly raise, retroactive from last Monday. The 20inch main now extends through Lenawee and will feed Pleasant Lake, Manchester, Battle Creek, Pontiac, and Adrian via a new branch to Holloway. Local factories rely on the gas supply as construction continues toward Adrian and Holloway, with roughly a week to ten days needed to complete the Adrian branch.
A blast at the Hitchman Coal and Iron Company mine near McMechen West Virginia killed three workers and burned two others. Ten miners escaped unharmed as crews recovered Harry Parks and Mike Polus, with John Mojzer still missing. The explosion lit the sky and damaged shaft walls, with the fire quickly controlled. The mine, employing about 300, was operating its 11 p m to 7 a m shift.
United States war bonds drive starts in Adrian under George H Little city chairman. Exchange Rotary Kiwanis and Junior Chamber of Commerce organize wage earners by firms and four groups including retired and other non categorizations. Sub chairmen lead committees to reach every worker this week for the war effort.
Moscow May 18 German forces continued desperate counterattacks around Kharkov as the Red Army pushed a 100 mile arc front from Volchansk to Krasnograd. Pravda reported waves of tanks and troops in wedges, parachute drops of up to 120 men, and heavy German losses while Russians gained 12 to 37 miles and held firm against German reinforcements.
A plane crash near Wichita on May 18 killed three aboard: Ben H. Miller 34 Baltimore Sun correspondent Cecil J. Lucas 43 Wichita pilot and Williams Knorr Wichita businessman. The aircraft struck a garage beside B C Dunn's Forest Hills home just outside city limits. Dunn family unharmed. Miller had been part of a tour of war plant inspections.
A joint Army Navy communiqué reviews war progress noting successful thrusts against Japan and raids on Gilbert and Marshall islands Wake Marcus and attacks on Japan. It recounts 600000 American troops moved to battle stations, Bataan rationing, Midway still American, and unified command across theaters with allied cooperation.
RAF daylight sweeps across the French coast from Dunkirk to Boulogne for more than two hours. Explosions along the English shore echoed as heavy fighting resumed over northern France. Reports say nine German planes and eight British machines were destroyed in yesterday’s skies. The Sunday driver era faded along the Atlantic seaboard as gasoline rationing of six days took effect from Maine to Florida. Church attendance dropped in Philadelphia Albany N Y and Atlanta Georgia. street cars and buses jammed. parking lots emptied. Inspectors warned motorists to gerage: state cars unless on essential missions. Golf with neighbors became common. Virginia and Maryland saw a 50 percent drop. New England described tourist numbers as below normal for midwinter.
London May 18 British air force engaged the 10,000 ton German cruiser Prinz Eugen off southern Norway in a running battle. Reports say aerial torpedo hits were scored while Prinz Eugen tried to reach Trondheim. The cruiser was escorted by four destroyers and many fighters as British Beauforts Hudsons Blenheims and Beaufighters attacked. nine British planes did not return. Turn to PRINZ EUGEN, Page 9. In Burma Japanese broadcasts said forces reached four miles from the Indian frontier after pursuing British and Chinese troops. Three hundred British soldiers were reported killed or routed at Lalewa.
Allied headquarters in Australia reported ten Japanese planes destroyed and three damaged over the weekend as operations focused on Lae and Deboyne Island. Nine Japanese aircraft were knocked out at Lae, with ground losses among bombers and a Zero. A separate raid near Port Moresby and a damaged seaplane at Deboyne Island were noted amid broad Allied efforts to weaken Japanese air strength in the Coral Sea region.
