St Nazaire Raid Damages German U Boat Base

British Commandos struck St Nazaire in a daring raid causing damage to the German U boat base. Destruction of the pumping station and main lock gate could force repairs and shift submarine activity elsewhere while survivors returned home amid hero’s welcome.

R P Watts Wife Dies After Short Illness

Mrs Florence Hooker Watts wife of Richard P Watts of 720 West Maumee Street died Sunday at Bixby hospital after acute appendicitis surgery on March 18. She was 39 born in Chicago educated there Linden Hall University of Illinois later married in Chicago October 16, 1924. Survival includes husband and four children Selly Richard P Watts Jr Herbert Watts, mother Mrs Mary Hooker sister Mrs Janata brother Archer Hooker. Funeral Tuesday at 3:30 pm Mott Funeral Home with Rev George D Prentice. Burial Oak Hills cemetery.

Holy Week Services Begin In Adrian Churches

Union Holy Week services will run tonight through Thursday at the Baptist Church with Rev. Morris H. Coers presiding. Tonight's first service features Rev. Finalists ready for district spelling bee finals

Lenawee county rural schools announced four finalists from each district for the county finals to be held Thursday at Adrian High School. District contests occurred at 21 centers, with the finals to be oral rather than written.

Toungoo Battle Reaches Critical Stage in Burma

In Chungking on March 30 the battle for Toungoo entered a critical phase as Japanese troops push against Chinese defenders. Munitions Plant Blast Kills Three at Remington Site

Bridgeport Connecticut March 30 A nail in a cartridge primer box blamed for a blast at the Remington Arms Company munitions plant killed three workers and injured eighty others, most of them laborers. Two women and one man were recovered. others remained unaccounted for. Melbourne reports Prime Minister John Curtin stated the first Japanese raid on Darwin killed about 240 people across land sea and air.
