Adrian First Traffic Fatality in 683 Days

Don Leroy DeMan, 21, Muskegon, died in a 3:21 p.m. Friday crash at Toledo and Locust. He was a junior at Adrian College and Sigma Alpha Epsilon member, riding with Roger Westen who faced a license charge. Westen claimed he slowed but did not stop. another driver also failed to stop. Police noted the intersection has seen recent crashes despite traffic controls.

Jaycee Paper Drive Sunday

The Adrian Junior Chamber of Commerce will hold a paper drive Sunday. Members will gather paper between 9 am and 12 noon. Residents are asked to bundle donations and leave them near the street. Jaycees meet at Adrian Salvage at 8:30 a.m.

Beast Battles Halted as Okinawa Tightens Rules

NAHA Okinawa government halted a planned animal fight featuring a lion against five dogs after protests from Japan and the United States. Social Affairs Director Shoshi Ota said no more applications for vicious animal fights of this nature would be approved. The trainer Choryo Yonaka had planned a lion versus bull event next month. Yonaka’s lion killed three dogs and maimed two others during last weekend’s event before spectators. The director did not address bans on other common Okinawan fights such as sockfights and battles between snakes and mongooses.

Train halted by Soviet check in East Germany over alleged swastika

In East Germany Soviet troops halted an American Army train headed to West Berlin claiming a swastika was drawn on a car. U S officials said no symbol was visible until after three hours in Soviet custody. The train was sent back to Helmstedt from Marienborn.

Severe Spring Break-Up Threatens County Roads

County highway engineer William M. Burchfield warns frost and thaw could devastate roads this spring. Up to two feet of frost lies under county roads and nearly 18 inches under sod, risking closures if ground not thawed gradually. The Lenawee road commission rejected six fire insurance bids and will re-bid April 8 while reviewing a petition to take Marsh Road into Devils Lake Yacht Club as a public road.

Next week Chamber of Commerce members will receive ballots with 12 Adrian men nominated for new officers. Seven will be selected and the votes opened and counted April 11 in the Chamber office. After tabulation Walter Hickey Cecil Wray and Mahlon Gray will nominate the new officers. On April 19 the new officers will be elected.

50 000 Brazilians Flee Flood Threat At Big Dam

In northeast Brazil the Oris earthen dam held under pressure as officials evacuated 50 000 residents from five towns. Clare Michigan Consumers Power Co faces a vote after striking 5600 workers in gas and electric services across four Lower Peninsula counties outside Detroit. Rocket Ship Goes 0500 Speed Flight Test

Edwards Air Force base in Sask Calif hosts the Gi Space agency test pilot Joe Walker who flew the X15 rocket ship for the first time. He overshot the dry lake landing by five miles due to a strong tailwind but landed safely. The craft reached about 50 000 feet and 1200 miles per hour during the mission. A Baz mother ship lifted the X15 for the release. The design targets 4000 miles per hour and 100 mile plus altitudes. This was the seventh powered X15 flight following earlier missions by Scott Crossfield and Wes.

Youth Held After Bomb Attack On Synagogue Wounding 2

A fire bomb targeted the Beth Israel synagogue in GAUSDEN Alabama. Two congregants were wounded when they rushed outside to investigate. Police arrested Jerry Earl Hutt, a 16 year old Attalla high school student, on assault with intent to murder charges. He admitted throwing the bomb and firing shots to avenge a grudge from a chess dispute. He showed no remorse and claimed to have acted alone though police kept the case open for more suspects. A car matching his stepfather’s was found nearby with a .22 rifle inside. Another youth was questioned and released.
