Washington July 24 The United States calls on all who cherish freedom to help defeat the Axis now. Secretary Hull says neutrality is futile and urges people to join those fighting to preserve regain or win freedom. He frames the war as a global test of liberty and urges allied and neutral nations to support the cause.
British armored forces pressed west of El Als mein while consolidating gains on the northern and central sectors in two days of sharp fighting. Artillery and RAF bombardments targeted Axis gun emplacements and transport lines. Central front saw British gains from the western end of El Ruweisxt ridge, coastal areas saw Australian forces holding Hill of Jesus. RAF fought off enemy dive bombers with several aircraft shot down. British losses reported at five planes. Italian high command announced Siwa Oasis occupation, 30 miles inside Egypt and 60 miles southeast of Giarabub.
A Fairfield man died and five people were injured in a crash between a large truck and a car on US-223 at Crane's corners near Adrian. Carl Clark, 45, died at Bixby hospital after severe head injuries. Oscar Fry of Melrose Park drove the truck. Injured include Lulu Clark, Helen Sidel, Thomas Sidel, 14, and Anna Martin. Clark and his son were released. others remained for treatment. The truck tipped but was not severely damaged. Clark's death marks Lenawee county's ninth traffic fatality this year. Funeral plans pending.
In a WPA wrecking operation a crowbar crew razed the 39 year old Bridge of Sighs above the Tombs and Criminal Courts in lower Manhattan. The 15 foot span, famed in crime lore, will yield ten tons of scrap metal as old buildings rise nearby.
Detrom July 24 Gerald 14 K. Smith chairman of the Committee of 1,000,000 and editor of The Cross and the Flag said that if the publication was named in an indictment for seditious conspiracy it is not his. An indictment against 28 persons charged with obstructing the war effort named The Cross and The Flag as used in the conspiracy. Smith, a Republican candidate for U.S. senator from Michigan, asserted his publication has not carried seditious articles and he would know it if it had.
Allied dive bombers and fighters hit the Gona Mission Buna area as a 5,000 ton fuel laden transport and two other ships were struck. Japanese forces press the Buna Salamua coasthead while divers and bombers target shore installations. More ships reportedly put ashore at Ambasi as air raids ignite fires and combat continues along the Papua frontier.
Adrian College criminology students toured penal and corrective facilities with Dr H K Fox and Rev Donn Stubbs. After visiting Southern Michigan Prison at Jackson they were en route to Starr Commonwealth at Albion when both drivers were arrested for failing to stop at an intersection. They received summons and were allowed to proceed, agreeing to penalties by mail.
News notes nationwide report pork shortages tied to large military and AMA purchases while beef supply tightens due to lighter weights and price ceilings. Secretaries Wickard plans price adjustment and subsidies to help small packers amid reduced operations.
Jackson workers threaten a labor holiday at midnight July 27 if the 115 city operating employees strike remains unresolved. UAW AFL local council informs War Labor Board chairman William H. Davis. Mediators Harry Gray and Robert Lomasney seek a conference with the city commission.
RAF bombers struck western Germany and invaded territory including Low Countries targets in a night raid. Seven British bombers reported missing while two enemy planes were shot down and seven German bombers fell to night attacks on Britain. Bedf ord, 40 miles north of London, was named as a target by German reports.
Lansing July 24 Capt Donald S Leonard commander of the State Citizens Defense Corps urged perfection of Michigan daytime alerts. He warned practice blackouts risk a false security noting Pearl Harbor and Tokyo daylight raids. He argued Axis bombing would target factories in daylight and that night wardens outnumber day wardens.
Secretary of War Samson outlined changes at a press conference to simplify procedures and release officers for field duty. The major move is reorganizing the nine corps areas into service commands, aimed at accelerating officer availability for frontline work.
Washington reports a government mobilization plan to confine civilian goods to a small number of plants. The War Production Board will designate nucleus sites to continue civilian work while larger facilities convert to war production. Small plants stay civilian where possible, while regions with labor surplus and good transport stay active. Also announced were a 10 percent cut in steel expansion and a 25 percent trucking mileage reduction from August 1.
Weirton Steel Company and the Weirton independent union signed a contract granting a 44 tents per day wage increase for wage workers and a 25 percent raise for salaried employees retroactive to January 1. Larry S. Lafferty, union president, said the move raises the payroll by 1.25 million dollars this year and applies to armed forces employees with over 900 thousand dollars to be distributed September 4 for back pay and vacation adjustments.
Brigadier General Lewis B. Hershey warned war industries to replace 300,000 current workers with women as the draft expands. He told the International Baby Chick Association convention that arms plants will lose manpower and must plan now to fill positions gradually to avoid a rude awakening.
Washington July 24 The Royal Air Force announces shifting of RAF cadet training from U S army air fields to bases in the British Dominions to accommodate rapid growth of American aviation cadets. The plan cites Britain's training capacity in the Dominions and swift American progress.
New York July 24 Finland proposed that the United States provide a postwar guarantee to help Finns extricate themselves from alliance with Germany and possible sacrifice to Soviet Russia in a United Nations win. For six months Finnish forces say they aimed to hold lines vs the Red Army, not strike offensively. Other dispatches note executions in Paris for a riot, and prosecutions in Marseilles and Avignon for Communist activities and grain concealment. Lansing reports preliminary studies for an international bridge across the St Marys River at Sault Ste Marie with bids due July 29 for foundation borings and soundings.
German controlled Netherlands radio said four Dutch men were executed by a German military court for breaking into a government food office in Amsterdam. The report was carried by The Netherlands shows agency. A separate Icelandic note reported Charles Howard Smith, 60, British minister to Iceland, found dead, with the liner Quanza sailing with troops for the Azores, the second shipload in two days, as Portugal reinforces in Lisbon.
War brief from The Associated Press notes Russia reports capture of Rostov and a last stand near the lower Don, with U S planes bombing the foe. Egypt British actions near El Alamein as Italians claim an oasis diversion. RAF night raids on Ruhr and Rhine valley. East Prussia bombings. Hall urges aid to freedom. MacArthur’s airmen cripple transport in New Guinea area.
Soviet and German forces clash across the Don and Rostov region as the Red Army defends the Caucasus rail link to Stalingrad. US bomber sorties join the fight while Russian units claim tank and infantry successes near Novocherkassk, Tsimlyansk, and Rostov amid heavy combat and shifting fronts.
Chief Justice Harlan F. Stone stated during summer vacation in Sugar Hill New Hampshire that he has not accepted and does not intend to accept the responsibility to conduct an independent inquiry into the rubber situation. He dismissed rumors that President Roosevelt had asked him to undertake such an inquiry.
In Port of Spain on July 24 the U S Army base construction is 50 advanced and staff reductions have begun. Lt Col Gustav Ring, acting district engineer, said seasonal rains prompted some workers to depart and several West Indian laborers were released. Reductions will be progressive.
