Rev S A Wood pastor of the Raisin Valley Friends church was struck from behind while driving his buggy near the district No 12 school house by two men who then fled. His daughter Eleanor Wood, en route to join a ship to Liverpool, screamed for help. Wood received three stitches for a head wound. investigators suspect a possible personal motive rather than robbery.
Attorney T J Thomas of Toledo faced Justice Humphrey on a destruction of property charge from R J Elliott of the Commercial House. Thomas pleaded guilty and paid a $1 fine plus costs as Elliott alleged he shoved his hand through a parlor window Wednesday night.
Sheriff brings Thomas Herpel from Genoa to answer for stealing a watch and chain from ex County Treasurer W H Wiggins. The suspect reportedly confessed, with the crime committed about a week prior. Harper pawed the items in Toledo at Isenberg's jewelry store and was arrested near Toledo by Officer Schroeder. arraignment pending.

Eliza Thomas, 40, later told police she aimed to reach Detroit to see an uncle, claiming her head was troubled by fortune telling. She was taken to the country jail for safety and was held for relatives or friends.

Lansing Michigan July 24 The report of the commissioner of insurance covering fire and marine insurers for the year shows six companies admitted to the state and six withdrawn. On June 1 1903 there were 110 joint stock companies licensed to operate in Michigan. Two were Michigan, 10 from other states and 34 from foreign countries. During the year two farmers mutual fire companies retired and six were organized leaving 1 transacting business at year end. Risks written totaled 459550122 premiums received 70572100 losses paid 3007353. The loss rate was 46 percent of premium income, the lowest since 1994. The commissioner says the financial condition of the companies is generally satisfactory and policyholders are amply protected.
A large fire at the Columbian Transfer Company's Campau Street plant began at 12 50 this morning and raged through a building filled with paper from city printing firms, household furniture, and storage items. No loss estimate was available. In Salt Lake City, July 24, several light earthquake shocks were felt, with Ogden experiencing the strongest tremor. no damage reported locally.
