Pope Leo XII dies after a long illness, with Cardinal Oreglia assuming temporary control of the Holy See. The scene outside the Vatican turns swift and hushed as officials prepare the deathbed rites, embalming, and a nine day funeral procession through St Peter's and St John Lateran.
Washington reports the death of Pope Leo XIII on July 20 1903. Apostolic Delegate Falconio relays the sorrowful news to American bishops and calls for universal prayers, with pontifical and funeral masses planned in dioceses.
A Massillon compound threshing engine exploded near Britton village around 11 o clock, destroying half the village windows. Bystanders including Dr. Elmer Hentershot C L Lowe Chas Oliver and James Hines escaped death, while Gatty owner of the engine and his fireman Redman were not harmed. Charles Oliver and Redman suffered cuts. debris damaged homes and a pane at John Exel nearby. The blast likely resulted from mud in the water gauge causing low steam, with the engine rear only remaining.

A hailstorm swept east Rock County Minnesota Monday afternoon causing about one million dollars in damage. Six townships suffered severe loss with most crops in the county destroyed or flattened within minutes. Corn and grain stripped trees bark peeled and leaves torn, barley ready for cutting ruined across some 120 sections.
Seattle July 21 reports a fire at the Golden Gate hotel in Nome dated July 10. The blaze started 5 am as guests slept. Second cook Burr allegedly poured coal oil on a stove causing an explosion and fled. Night clerk Harvey Edgerton woke guests. The three story hotel had no fire escapes and burned rapidly. R M Hayes of Pittsburgh and Sherman D Gragg of Freeport perished. Daggett Harris, owners, estimate losses at 50000 with warehouses and guests bringing total near 100000.
