Special to The Telegram Rome July 20 Pope Lee died this morning at 4:04 amid a hushed death chamber vigil. His heart’s vitality persisted to the end though other functions faded. He recognized no one for hours, occasionally aroused briefly by physicians or attendants before sinking back into stupor.
Rome reports the dying pope Leo in coma or torpor with observers noting a hushed Vatican, guarded by Swiss sentinels. Doctors warn the last agony may come at any moment while the Corriere Romano awaits a special edition. Officials tighten censorship as Italy and Vatican prepare for the pope’s death.
The Detroit Tribune notes Lenawee County Pioneer and Horticultural Society will honor Mrs. Maria Hixon of Clinton as star performer at the August event at the Log Cabin on the fair grounds. She is in her 104th year and has lived in Lenawee County 77 years. President John J. Knapp will arrange a bell tone portrait with other century plus members, despite photographer shortages. Local mills will pause to permit the photo, as plans press for a large gathering of old settlers and a forthcoming county biographical work.

Report from Red Lodge Montana describes Jim Gorman and Walters being lynched at Basin Wyoming after a mob seized prisoners from jail. Deputy Sheriff C E Pierce killed, Sheriff Fenton seeks militia aid as Thermopolis region rumors of further clashes threaten armed confrontation. Police actions involve Alston and Meade guarding prisoners.
The report records temperatures from 62 to 78 and a high of 82 with a low of 59. A forecast mentions fair conditions in Washington and Ohio with showers near the lake, rising temperatures, and light variable winds in Michigan and Upper Michigan.

Reports list a special grand jury to investigate murders in the Jackson area with Capt. B F Ewen as chief witness and a $4500 fund raised for the family if death occurs. Other items mention a Cleveland preacher denouncing religion as shaped by business, a lynching aftermath in Basin Wye, and various international and immigration notes.
Polly Sheldon of 19 Spring Street nears her hundred fifteenth birthday in a quiet celebration. A former War of 1812 pensioner, born Polly Laversa in New York, she has lived in Tioga County over fifty years. She has been married three times and now lives with daughter Mrs Howard Fisher. Despite frailty, she enjoys good health and hopes for more anniversaries with friends.
Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway offers a popular low rate excursion to Niagara Falls Toronto and Alexandria Bay. The Fe worth League sixth International convention concluded in Detroit with talks on lynching and race, as Epworth Leaguers from Lafayette Indiana and others depart. Delegates hailed from across the nation, with about 30,000 Epworthians in Detroit. Local speakers urged moral leadership, ballot integrity, and organized Epworth League chapters to bolster the colored community.
St Johns Michigan July 20 Becomes scene as farmer Greenbush resident McClintock hurled a rail before an auto injuring the machine and jolting its occupants. Local justice taxed him fees and costs. Miss F MacInearuny contributed rocs numbers while Miss Lucy G Moulton accompanied Wrecking an Automobile at Atlanta Georgia with Mrs Egbert J T Hill and Fred Thomas noted in attendance.
Lansing July 20 list shows over ten million in capital across firms including Ypsilanti Paper Co. $100000, Automatic Heating Co. $3000000, Peninsular Stove Co. $3000000, Cuban Produce Co. Ltd Detroit $300000, Wisconsin & Michigan Railway Co. Me nomine $1000000 and others from Ypsilanti to Detroit and Battle Creek.
A. Kelsey, a Buchanan area farmer, armed with a carving knife, attacked his wife and children on a drunken Saturday night. The family fled to a neighbor’s home, police intervened, and Kelsey was jailed in Buchanan. His son has filed a complaint to prosecute. The incident has stirred local fear and resentment.
Hendrick Ten Braak, 70, shot and fatally wounded his 19 year old son Albert and attempted to kill his wife in a Saturday night assault. Albert lies in St Marys hospital with two bullets in his body and a guarded prognosis. Ten Braak, jailed to await the murder attempt outcome, had earlier faced divorce from his wife over alleged intemperate habits and abuse.
Bay City reports the executive council of LL. Mt. & T. A. Sunday session endorses further organization and expansion. They aim to thoroughly organize the United States and Canadian seacoast lines. An additional storm note comes from Ann Arbor where sparrows litter the courthouse lawn. 1,500 birds killed by wind and rain in a small area. Kalamazoo records the death of notable financier Frederick N. Rowley, president of the First National Bank, who died after a stroke paralysis at age 58.
Ellen E Eldred a temperance lecturer from Laurens N Y toured Adrian last Saturday speaking on street corners and in saloons. She faced rough handling including being ejected splashed with seltzer and knocked about in several venues but generally drew crowds as she sold her poetry based literature and prepared to pursue a civil suit for damages from a Ft Wayne assault.
