Paratrooper survives 3500 ft fall at Adrian airport
Lt. Dorr C. Walker of Detroit CAP Parachute Squadron No. 2 fell 3,500 feet when a new chute opening device failed to function. He struck trees and ground near the Adrian airport, suffering back and heel injuries but was reported in favorable condition at Bixby hospital. Witnesses said the fall was at high speed as the parachute twisted and failed to open.

Three Car Accidents Near Tecumseh Reported
Special to The Telegram Tecumseh July 17 Three automobile accidents occurred yesterday afternoon near Tecumseh. An Iron River driver Andrew Taylor collided with Gordon H Horn of Detroit. Mrs Taylor was thrown from the car with no serious injuries. A wheat truck driven by a farm employee was struck by Mrs Pence two miles northeast of Tecumseh. the truck driver was slightly injured. Police were rear ended by a Clinton man William Noble while responding to the second crash. Fern Saunders and Harriet Curtis were involved in a second collision two miles north of Adrian near Round Top school. Saunders sustained minor bruises. An early morning crash near Fairfield left Merrill Fisher’s car leaving the road. passengers James Porter David Hoffman Lynde Dittie unharmed. Sheriff’s deputies investigated all incidents.

Polar Bear Bites Off Girl Arm at Central Park Zoo
In New York on July 17 Miss Catherine Searles 24 of Rahway New Jersey lost her right arm when a polar bear named Soc attacked her after being awakened. Four companions watched as guards and witnesses used lighted matches and a newspaper to deter the bear. She underwent emergency surgery at Roosevelt Hospital and was listed in critical condition. Detectives recovered her bracelet and a sapphire ring from the cage area.

Nine-Year-Old Electrocuted On Fence At Devils Lake
Tommy Hess nine, son of Mr and Mrs Clare Hess of 561 Dennis Street, was electrocuted while frog hunting on Ray Mangus farm near Highland Beach Inn Devils Lake when he touched an electric fence carrying a 110 volt charge. Coroner announces inquest Friday at 10 a.m. at the courthouse. John Wernescher of Toledo, vacationing with parents, was shocked but wearing rubber-soled shoes. Authorities say the fence charger was out of order and connected directly to a regular outlet. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Everiss Funeral Home with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.

25 Second Half Car Plates Sold
First half automobile license plates remain valid until August 31 but only 25 second half plates were sold at the Adrian office on East Maumee Street over the weekend. Mrs. Budd Goodwin predicts about 5,000 second half plates will be sold in the county. Buyers must bring first half plates registration stub and car title until August 10. after August 10 the old plate is not required.

Mrs Edna Pieh received word from Washington that her son Pfc Kenneth Pieh has been missing in action in France since June 15. Cave of horrors on Saipan shows civilians murdered
