Chicago July 17 Charles A Spring Jr former manager of McCormick Harvester Co for four years died at his home aged 75 He once pledged 250000 to philanthropy when his fortune exceeded that amount He retired from active work in 1889 plus brief notes on ministers at Indianapolis and other July 17 items from Chicago Milwaukee New York Denver and San Francisco that day

In Ann Arbor on July 17 deputies Fred Gillen Bert Gillen and George Fischer chased a band of hoboes who overpowered them winning back their revolvers after a brief struggle near an icehouse. The trio escaped westward with most of the deputies’ gear and a $50 reward was offered for their capture.

In Onaway a man, George Hodges, is charged with assaulting 11 year old Tillie Taylor near Black Lake and was chased by a local constable. Bird Head a Ponca Indian aged 6 0 and his squaw aged 81 pleaded guilty in federal court to manslaughter on a reservation and were released with suspended sentence. Perry Laravne had unintentionally slain their son Peter and in tribal tradition handed life to Bird Head who shot him. The squaw cut him with an axe, matching Indian law with white law.
