Desperate desert combat erupts west of El Alamein as British and Axis forces clash. RAF and US planes reportedly destroyed 490 to 500 Axis vehicles from a 2,000-vehicle concentration, while 53 trucks were also claimed knocked out. Rommel’s reinforcements strained, frontline gains unclear amid sandstorms and renewed fighting.
Monroe says 34 city workers from three departments will return to work under a compromise with the city commission. Street maintenance will be 44 hours for six months and 40 hours for the other six. garbage collection shifts drop from 48 to 40 hours for six months starting Aug 2. Overtime will be paid at time and a half in both departments. Six sewage disposal workers’ $10 monthly raise request is held pending an audit due Sept 1. adjustments retroactive to that date. The new schedules cost the city about $3,500. The workers are part of CIO affiliated State County and Municipal Workers of America.
Chicago July 11 Wide World Service report shows meat packers unofficially saying they cannot operate profitably with hogs at $15 per hundredweight as Office of Price Administration anti inflation rules keep dressed pork and lard quotations frozen. Producers dispute the claim, arguing packers always complain of losses, while hog prices were urged to gain federal attention to possible live hog ceilings. Hog prices retreated later but closed only modestly below the peak, with lighter receipts. Beef and lamb markets moved variedly with steers and yearlings higher, natives mixed, and lambs down.
The Smaller War Plants Corp appointed five directors to use 15 million dollars to bring small factories into war production. Lou E. Holland, deputy WPB director, named likely chairman. other appointees include James Howington William Shipley Albert Carter Samuel Abbott Smith. Axis ships Cairo attack reports: Italian destroyer and 5000 ton merchant ship hit twice by medium bombers and naval aircraft.
Next week paper collections will be made in Adrian on Monday for Precinct Four, Wednesday for Precinct Eight, and Friday for Precinct Nine. If it rains, collections will be postponed by one day.
Alexandria Egypt June 28 Delayed report describes a dramatic air attack by U S bombers and RAF on Mussolini s Mediterranean fleet. Submarine commander Lieut Stephen L Maydon reports Italian ships circling, ships weaving, and heavy anti aircraft fire as 35 bomb hits are credited to American planes on two battleships. British say an Italian cruiser two destroyers and a submarine were sunk in the action near a convoy bound for Malta. The engagement followed a dawn sighting of the fleet by the submarine center of the circle.
DETROIT July 11 Judge Frank A Pickard disclosed he received a letter threatening harm to him and his family while a sentence was pending in a case from the Sojourner Truth Housing riot last February The letter appeared from a Negro group but may have come from others prejudiced against them Judge Pickard said He was sentencing Alexander Kendrick 20 to a year in prison for violating the federal firearms act after a pistol was found in his automobile near the housing project scene of February riot Also Lansing July 11 The Republican State Convention to finish nominating a ticket for November will be held in Detroit Sept 25 Campaign committee set time and date county conventions to select delegates for the state meeting Sept 21 Each county gets one delegate per 750 votes cast for Secretary of State in prior election but not fewer than three

Public news remained scarce as the panel, led by Major General Frank R. McCoy, heard FBI testimony and reviewed documents. Indications pointed to the trial likely extending into next week. Elmer Davis urged more public information from the chambers.
A late night House Ways and Means Committee vote increased the income tax by one percent, lifting the combined rate in the lowest bracket from 30 to 31 percent and adding about 320 million in revenue while preserving exemptions for soldiers. The bill, after weeks of hearings, heads for further congressional debate.
DETROIT July 12 Americans as individuals will have to improvise as war production expands. Donald M. Nelson of the War Production Board urged auto industry leaders to plan long, intensified output with scarcer materials. He praised Knudsen, predicted 45 to 70-75 billion dollars in war goods production, and warned about limited materials and the need for synthetic rubber.
An AP tally shows 354 Allied and neutral losses in Western Atlantic waters after five more cargo ship sinkings by U boat shells and torpedoes. Sixteen seamen died in four merchant ships, two British, one American, one Belgian, with 230 crewmen rescued. The Cuban navy reported a Hon duran craft sunk with all hands saved. Canada’s government would not confirm a report that three ships were sunk in the St Lawrence River amid a claimed 14 ship convoy attack off Cape Chat with three ships destroyed.
Detroit July 12 War autos shift slows as factories adapt to war needs and plan for peacetime re conversion. Industry estimates push return to civilian car production from four to six months to eight to nine months or more depending on wartime demand and material constraints. Replacement parts supply also tightens under wartime repair rules.

In Flagstaff Arizona on July 11 six Black soldiers armed with automatic weapons terrorized the core business district after an all night cafe refusal. One soldier was fatally wounded and another wounded when deputies and police intervened. The intoxicated casualty died pending coroner inquest. Maj Nichols and Sheriff Peery Francis stated several soldiers were seized or shot. two were struck by bullets and others captured, with investigation ongoing.
The Senate Appropriations Committee backed a 120 million dollar operating fund for the Office of Price Administration, with added restrictions. It bars using funds for subsidies and requires wage and price controls be supported by existing margins, while Senate confirmation is required for higher paid OPA staff.
German forces drive toward Rossosh 150 miles east of Kharkov and cut the Moscow Rostov railway. Soviet communiques report fierce fighting near Rossosh and an orderly retreat to prepared positions. Timoshenko counterattacks as German gains threaten Donetz and Caucasus, with large forces and heavy losses on both sides.
London reports Germans reached Yelets northwest of Voronezh signaling a wider Don front.
