Desperate rescue efforts failed to save Charles F Thieler aged about 16 after he sank during a river swim near the Sans Souci summer resort on the St Clair river Detroit. His companions Arthur Thieler and Frank Mitchell along with bystanders searched the water for over an hour before recovery. Other notes include a Kalamazoo man missing since July 4, a lumber loss at Standish, severe burns to a Miss Carrie White, a Muskegon lighthouse fire that burned the new beacon to the water, and Wells near Escanaba awaiting timber supplies for years.

Lorillard Dead Head of Great Tobacco House Dies in New York
Pierre Lorillard died at 2:10 p.m. at the Fifth Avenue hotel after returning from Europe aboard the Deutschland. He founded and controlled the Lorillard tobacco firm, built a grand Fifth Avenue home, and was a prominent turfman and yachtsman who established the Tuxedo resort. He was nearly 68 and survived by his widow, Pierre Lorillard Jr., and daughters Mrs. William Kent and Mrs. T. Suffern Tailor. The funeral is set for Grace Church with Greenwood interment.
