Seven Japanese planes hit by U S anti aircraft fire

The War Department reported heavy U S anti aircraft fire at Manila Bay during a four hour attack. Corregidor and General MacArthur’s forces faced 50 Japanese planes with limited damage and casualties described as light.

Ralph Tew Named Draft Board Member

Ralph A. Tew of Morenci, president of the Lenawee County Fair Association, was appointed the third member of the Lenawee county draft board by the Lansing executive office. He replaces Frederick P. Wood and will begin duties this week as the board awaits February 16 registration orders for men aged 20 to 44 who have not registered. A Detroit army physicians panel examined 56 county men, finding 32 fit for service.

State Policeman Is Named State Defense Director

Governor Van Wagoner named Capt. Donald S. Leonard of the State police as director of civilian defense for Michigan. Leonard will oversee citizen protective services including air raid wardens and auxiliary firemen, coordinating personnel and maintaining high efficiency across communities during emergencies. The civilian defense effort remains distinct from health, morale, nutrition, and consumer protection.

Forty Thousand Japanese Trapped by Chinese Forces

Chinese spokesman said around 40,000 Japanese troops are caught in a Chinese trap on the plains between the Laotao and Linyang rivers northeast of Changsha in Hunan. He claimed 30,000 casualties overall and that only 30,000 of the original 100,000 escaped toward Yochow. Japanese retreat reported, blamed on blocked heavy arms movement and flooded fields.

Girl alerts sick man as house burns in Manitou Beach

Auto Industry Converted to War Production Effort

Washington January 6 a one day old automotive labor management committee began converting the motor industry to war production under government orders to double output over peace time rates. The joint panel of five labor and five management leaders will plan pooling of tool and plant resources to produce planes tanks ordnance and war essential tools. The Office of Production Management may approve revise or reject plans aiming for about six billion dollars of war goods this year, compared with under three billion in pre war auto production. The presidents of major automakers were expected to select a chairman at the first meeting today as the group supersedes the Automotive Industry Advisory Committee as the top strategic board for the industry.

Men Quit Working At Ryan Aircraft Plant In San Diego
