Bauer Hurt in Plane Battle in Northwest Africa

Staff Sergeant Clarence E. Bauer former St Josephs high school student son of Mr and Mrs John Bauer of 933 South Main Street was slightly wounded in action in northwest Africa January 29 according to a telegram received yesterday by his parents He was a gunner on a flying fortress His parents say he wrote of Captain Fred W Dallas the pilot who crash landed after being damaged by five German MB 109s Dallas was critically wounded and five other crew members were slightly wounded The No 3 engine was knocked out and the bomb doors could not be closed due to electrical failure The ball turret gunner was wounded by flak The bomber crashed after a steep dive but all crew members escaped Bauer earlier received a flight heroism medal for aiding an officer his unit reported from Tripoli last month.

Fire Strikes Evansville State Hospital for the Insane

Evansville Indiana February 9 fire destroyed the Evansville State Hospital for the Insane leaving about 1,200 inmates to flee into an outdoor yard guarded by police, home guards and American Legion members. Nowak Falsification Case Dismissed In Detroit

The citizenship falsification case against State Senator Stanley Nowak was dismissed and shelved, after a motion by a U S attorney general aide was granted by Judge Edward J Moinet. The indictment had accused Nowak of lying about Communist Party ties in his 1939 citizenship application. Schweinhaut said Biddle accepted responsibility for the error in pursuing the indictment.

Filipino Knife Turned In By Gilbert

George Gilbert retired Adrian mail carrier turned in a Philippine machete with a 21 inch curved blade and carved handle. The knife was given by Louis Manchester who served in the Spanish American War. James Campbell donated a Sheffield steel knife eight inches, meeting paratrooper Bailey’s specs. A hunting knife was donated by Allen T. Clark. All knives remain at the station for forwarding to service members overseas.

Manpower Meetings Set in Adrian for War Prosecution

OPA to Peg Milk Prices Aims to Curb Retail Hikes

Washington Feb 9 The Office of Price Administration plans nationwide ceilings on prices farmers receive for fluid milk with a temporary order pegging prices at the highest levels paid to producers last month. A permanent regulation will follow in 60 days. Pegged prices will be 113 percent of parity, ranging 2.75 to 4.80 per hundredweight by area. The OPA will also cut alfalfa hay prices by 4 to 8 per ton in Pacific states to ease farmer feed costs while a 60 day interim study assesses dairy production and producer prices. The move follows directives from Economic Stabilization Director James F Byrnes.
