With gas rationing in effect, the county board outlines tire inspection rules for A B and C cardholders. Auto owners must have tires inspected within set intervals, present inspection slips, and may be charged a fee for inspection and tire removal. Commercial vehicles follow a 60 day or 5000 mile cycle.
Heavy snow blanketed Michigan from Benton Harbor to Marquette with accumulations over six inches in several counties. Highways were hazardous yet largely open, and no main roads were blocked according to Lansing officials. Snow totals included 5.2 inches in Lansing, five inches in Manistee and Ann Arbor, and four inches in Jackson Ludington and Clare. Muskegon reported 22 inches in 22 hours. Temperatures remained in the twenties as Detroit logged its season’s heaviest 2.5 inch fall.

Two Lansing men formerly at Selective Service headquarters were indicted on conspiracy to steal blank draft cards and sell them to minors to obtain drinks in saloons. Peter John Carey, 21, and Bruce McKay, a Private in the Army at Birmingham, Ala., are charged with conspiring to violate the Selective Service Act and face up to five years and $10,000 fines. FBI joined inquiry after tavern owners reported young men presenting draft cards. Carey allegedly obtained about 25 blank cards while at the office.

Russian forces by passed Rzhev and advanced toward Vyazma after reaching the area of Bely 60 miles south of Toropets and 40 miles west. Soviet information bureau said the Toropets column was conducting an offensive that had routed German units including the 33d tank regiment 216th infantry and the 13th Chasseurs battalion.
