Labor holiday at Hard Lock Manufacturing escalates into a wildcat strike with several hundred workers walking out over the rehiring of a non union supervisor. Pickets form outside the Detroit area plant as Machinists Local No 1268 seeks Navy and union actions and NLRB involvement.
A wartime plea urges the Hurd Lock plant workers to resume shell production for the Navy. It emphasizes that Navy sailors risk their lives, and production delays endanger soldiers and civilians alike. The message reminds workers of relatives in service and appeals to conscience and patriotism to return to steady operations by Monday.
Chicago December 5 The nations flour trade was at a standstill as mills and government officials sought relief from price ceilings and rising wheat prices. The Office of Price Administration kept flour ceilings in place since October 3 prompting complaints from mills and Army Navy buyers unable to place orders. CCC head Hutson met with Secretary Wickard to discuss next steps as steps to relieve the market were anticipated.
United States now produces engines of war at a volume equal to Axis arms output, Nelson reports at NAM meeting. He projects US output nearly matching all rest of world by end of 1943, with UN production ahead of Axis by almost three to one. Kaiser urges postwar planning and fair play, while Roosevelt and Marshall stress continued mobilization and realistic war aims.
Lansing December 5 The state liquor control commission ordered a sober Christmas Eve for licensees by 10 p.m. with closures until at least 7 a.m. Christmas Day Nightclubs, drinking houses, privately owned liquor stores, those with self beer and licensed hotels are covered The recommendation is 6 p.m. closing the night before Christmas to align with estate stores closing time Commissioner Felix H H Flynn said the order supports the Christian spirit and allows employees to spend time with families.
In Wisconsin on December 5 the army quartermasters turned Lake Superior herring into a war food, freezing and delivering hundreds of tons at three cents a pound. Once fur farms and coastal markets used the fish, now it supports service members with plans for local plants and home labor as a new seasonal industry grows along the south shore.
In Washington on December 3, the Associated Press reports intensified Japanese desperation drives to reinforce Guadalcanal. Navy Secretary Knox warned enemy efforts to land reinforcements continue as U.S. forces expand on the island. The Solomon seas have become a graveyard for ships and crews, with hundreds of enemy vessels damaged or sunk and American losses mounting.
Tecumseh veteran John J. Orr, age 87, marked his birthday by a five mile walk, reflecting on a life spent in medicine and service. A former Telegram reporter and longtime druggist, he remains active in his community, visiting customers across Lenawee and neighboring counties. He is the oldest member of Tecumseh’s Presbyterian church and active in Masonic orders and Eastern Star, maintaining a lifelong habit of attending lodge functions even on foot across towns.
Prime Minister Churchill addressed cheering crowds in Bradford amid reports of heavy Allied bombers striking Naples and German resistance in North Africa. He warned of hard fighting ahead, urged unity, and voiced confidence in victory with American allies while noting the need for restraint in expectations.
Soviet dispatches report Red Army gains forming a triangle with the Don as base as they push from Kalach and Berlachy toward Sokareika and Ilfarionov sky. German forces are said to be forming new defenses while Red Army claims heavy Axis casualties and several small positions recaptured near Stalingrad.
Brig. Gen. Clayton L. Bissell says the 10th U S Air Force carried out 21 heavy raids in November including ten on Burma and Thailand targets with 150 tons dropped. Jap bombs did not reach India Burma front. ships sunk totaled five. China task force destroyed 39 Japanese planes, with 23 probables damaged. Only two American pilots lost in China and one heavy bomber in India. Japanese attacks on bases caused only runway bomb craters.
The first December group of Lenawee county selective service registrants will leave Adrian Monday evening for the Detroit induction station for final physical examinations. They will meet at 7:45 at the Adrian armory for roll call and instructions before assembling at the Wabash station. The train leaves at 9:05 Monday morning. The second group, held over in Detroit for further exams, will depart to begin active duty at Fort Custer, meeting at 6:45 am at the Short Way Lines bus station with bus departure at 7:20.
Allied heavy bombers struck Naples in broad daylight from Mediterranean bases, causing heavy civilian casualties and damage. The Italian communique reported 159 dead and 358 wounded. Maj. Gen. Carl Spaatz arrived at Allied North Africa HQ to help counter Axis air forces in Tunisia as ground fighting raged near Bizerte Tunis.
Allied forces push in central Tunisia recapturing Tebourba and Mateur as Axis counterattacks press toward Tunis Bizerte. In Russia Reds report 11 towns seized and 3,000 Nazis killed near Stalingrad while renewed offensives widen the Rzhev front. In the Pacific Jap holdouts at Buna Gona face costly sea resupply and paratroop drops as Guadalcanal battles intensify. General Spaatz arrives to head air operations, and Churchill warns of a long, hard fight ahead.
