A telegram dispatch notes Reliance struggling in heavy seas and changing wind as the international yacht race progresses. Wind fluctuates from five to ten knots while Shamrock gains. Reliance leads at times but faces near finish under time limit uncertainties.
At 3 53 p m the Reliance trails the Shamrock by over two miles with about seven miles covered toward the finish. The wind shifts to six knots and a tight race remains to the time limit of 4 03 p m. The Reliance closes to within a mile and a half of the line as finish nears.
Walter Bailey longtime Adrian resident and brass finisher turned evangelist died at 10 p m at his home 16 Dennis street after a two month bed confinement following a four decade cancer battle He was born May 3 1889 in Nottinghamshire England came to the United States 34 years ago He married Harriet Austen in England about 40 years ago and the couple traveled the evangelical field before returning to Adrian six years ago He is survived by his wife son Luther Bailey of Toronto a adopted daughter Daisy Bailey and daughter Louisa Bailey who died in Adrian three and a half years ago Also surviving are brother Luther Bailey and four sisters Mrs John Naylor Mrs Samuel Jay and Mrs James Townsend Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p m from the Friends church West Maumes Street

Chicago police report two men killed and two wounded in a bold holdup at the Chicago City Railway barns at Sixty first and State streets. Aug 31 Kalamazoo Michigan The state board of education selects Kalamazoo as the site for the new Western Michigan Normal School. The board lays out site requirements including a 20 acre grant free of encumbrances, utility hookups at no cost, graded adjacent streets, cement walks, a publicly funded training building for five years, half salary support up to 250 dollars per teacher, and a 40000 dollar cash gift deposited to the state treasurer for the project.
Acting governor A T Bliss proclaims Labor Day on September 7 1903 urging a general observance to honor workers. He calls for focus on the dignity of labor and aims to improve conditions for laborers and management to foster mutual good and patriotic duty.

Salonica report Aug 31 describes a Bulgarian insurgent setback at Smilovo where about 1,000 were killed or wounded as Turkish forces led by Servet Pasha stormed a sunken position after Bulgarian insurgents had captured Naveski. The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway plans its annual excursion on September 10 to Bay View Charlevoix Elk Rapids Petoskey Traverse City and Mackinac Island via Grand RapidsIndiana and Pere Marquette lines from Grand Rapids. The special train departs Adrian at 7 a.m. with a very low round trip fare of 3 to all listed points except Mackinac Island at 4. Tickets are valid for eleven days from sale.
