Mississippians planned solemn farewell for Theodore Gilmore Bilbo after his death in New Orleans at 69 from heart failure after cancer. The body lay in state at Bilbo’s Dream Home in Poplarville with National Guard guards on duty. Funeral set for Juniper Grove Baptist Church with Rev D W Nix officiating. buried beside his parents. 50 Hurt When Theater Ceiling Collapses

Meadville Pennsylvania August 22 The collapse occurred during a motion picture at the Park theater injuring about 50 people with two in critical condition as the steel mesh and plaster section 20 by 25 feet fell to the floor In all about 28 victims were taken to Meadville hospitals including Joseph Maggio 21 and Ronald Ross 15 the theater manager Leo Conrad said the crowd numbered around 1000 as debris showered patrons and several were treated at the scene or nearby drug stores

Rural teachers set meeting in Lenawee court room

A rural teachers meeting for Lenawee county will be held in the court room of the Lenawee county courthouse on Aug 30 at 9 30 am. The half day session will distribute materials and provide guidance for the coming school year. Probation for atom data theft by ex-soldier student

Alexander von der Luft, 23, former army sergeant and Princeton student, received four years probation in federal court for taking secret atomic bomb papers. FBI recovered 200 handwritten pages and other restricted data at his Princeton home and from Los Alamos materials. He admitted taking the documents claiming souvenirs and bragging rights.

Four New Store Fronts Being Installed on North Main Street

Four North Main Street business places are installing new store fronts with a fifth planning similar work. Permits were issued by the city hall building inspector. Young's Jewelry Store at 109 North Main Street will feature natural finished aluminum and curved glass and an all glass door. Leo Marks Jewelry Store at 115 North Main Street will add a new front and remodel the interior with built in cases and modern lighting. The second floor will also be remodeled. Citizens Gas Fuel Co at 127 Worth Main and the Derby Barber next door receive new fronts as part of a two year remodeling program, including gas air conditioning, new tile flooring and lighting. Hayes Shoe Company at 117 North Main Street plans a fluted aluminum front with two entrances and new interior remodeling.

Postmaster Dies of Heart Attack in Lapeer

Pi Guy D. Thompson, 73 year old postmaster of Lapeer since 1935, died after a heart attack suffered Thursday at Saginaw General Hospital. Funeral services are planned for Saturday in Lapeer.

Ford And CIO Officials Agree On 2 Contracts

Ford Motor Co and the CIO UAW reached two alternative labor pacts leaving the decision to Ford's 107,000 production workers. Ten Chevrolet division plants in Detroit were closed today with three more shutting tonight and six scheduled to idle next week due to a shortage of sheet steel. Pontiac division plants also closed tonight. Most units are set to resume September 2, with some remaining idle until September 8. about 60,000 hourly workers will be laid off for one week to ten days before operations restart.

Lightning strikes bridge in Columbus. fears of more victims

A lightning bolt tore into the 825 foot Broad Street bridge over the Scioto River at rush hour in Columbus Ohio. A large crane was used to remove heavy debris as authorities feared additional bodies might lie beneath. Four injured were hurled into the river and rescued. Over 100 feet of balustrade collapsed into the water and crews continued searching the river bottom. Built in 1921 the bridge cost $600 000.
