Summer students to receive degrees at Adrian College

The Adrian College summer session ends Friday with informal graduation for 12 students in Downs Hall at 10:40 a.m. Final exams follow. Registrar Mrs. M. C. Beauty queen loses dam name twist in Nevada saga

Peggy McCarty of Tacoma, 20, crowned Miss Boulder Dam at a Disabled American Veterans session in Las Vegas, was denied posing on Hoover Dam unless ribbon read Miss Boulder City. Washington ordered the dam’s name to be used, then Congress reversed to restore Hoover Dam.

Mother Drowns in Lake Adrian

Mrs. Marion Smith, 25, wife of Hal Smith of Adrian Trailer Park, drowned at Lake Adrian after stepping into a deep hole while her two young children watched. Rescue attempts failed. coroner ruled accidental death. Survived by husband two sons and multiple Ekman relatives. Body to be shipped to Tronwood for funeral.

Navy pilot sets speed mark of 640.7 mph

U S Navy Commander Turner Caldwell Jr. of Arlington Va. piloted the jet Skystreak D-558 on a 3-km course at Muroc Calif to establish an international air speed record averaging 640.7 mph across four runs. The plane’s fastest time reached 653.4 mph.

Corn And Oats Prices Hit New Peak

Chicago August 21 Corn and oats rose to new record highs on the Board of Trade as drought reduced Midwest grain supplies. September corn traded at 2.45 a bushel and September oats at 31.08, surpassing prior peaks set earlier and in 1920. Wheat also gained two to five cents per bushel during the session.

Taft Hartley Act Takes Full Effect as Law Tomorrow

Washington Aug 21 The Taft Hartley Act takes full effect at midnight removing about 3000 back NLRB cases including union petition matters unless unions file non Communist affidavits within 20 days. Changes include new unfair labor practices and a one year limit on signed closed shop contracts. AFL CIO unions respond variably with some filing and others delaying. International Association of Machinists filed the required disclosures yesterday.

Soviet Union vetoes Italy and Austria bids for U N membership

In Lake Success on August 21 the Soviet Union vetoed bids by Italy and Austria for United Nations membership. The votes blocked immediate admission, backing Australian proposals to refer the matter to the General Assembly meeting September 16. Hungary’s membership was also nixed earlier, with nine abstentions. Soviet Delegate Gromyko argued the Australian plan violated both the Potsdam agreement and the UN Charter.

Wedemeyer Plans China Departure Without Public Recommendations

British warn Jews to leave vessels off Marseille

Britain issued an ultimatum to 4400 Jewish refugees aboard three ships off Marseille to disembark by tomorrow or be transported to Germany. The refugees, mostly Poles, have refused France’s hospital offer, with agency spokesmen calling any Hamburg landing a crime against humanity. The Jews threaten a hunger strike if denied entry to Palestine.

U S protests Soviet rule in Dairen port

The State Department disclosed a new United States protest to Moscow over the Red occupation of Dairen China. The note warned the Soviet government it will be held responsible for treatment of American interests while the port remains under Soviet control. Under a 1945 treaty Dairen was to be returned to Chinese administration and opened to trade. Russia has banned foreign shipping, including American naval vessels, from the port and is blocking mail and supplies to the U S consul general.

Britain Suspends Pound Dollar Convertibility In Shortage Move

Britain suspends pound to dollar convertibility to curb dollar reserves drain. Chancellor Hugh Dalton warned of looming shortages as the plan, effective at midnight, follows Washington talks on Britain’s loan terms. A Treasury spokesman cited $850 million US balance, with $345.6 million available to pay for US orders and $400 million frozen. Secretary Snyder said Britain has not requested more loans and sought full understanding of domestic issues affecting the loan.
