Tragic Adrian High student dies after car crash

James B. Mitchell 16, Adrian high school junior, dies at Bixby hospital after a four-teendriver car veers out of control near Palmyra. Four boys, including Mitchell, Hense, Spangenberg, and another Mitchell, were injured. Hense released, Sprangenberg with chest injuries, coroner to decide on inquest. Funeral set for Tuesday at Tagsard Funeral Home.

Three Blissfield Family Members Drown Near Isle Royale

Special to The Telegram reports three Blissfield residents Harold and Irma Holmes and their 14-year-old son Fritz drowned off Isle Royale in Lake Superior. Mrs Lucille Pindle of Columbus, a vacation acquaintance, is believed recovered from a capsized 14 foot boat. Coast Guard crews and a plane search the area near Tobias Harbor as officials seek the Holmes family bodies. Harold Holmes, 40, worked as a general supervisor for Michigan Bell in Detroit. Irma Holmes, 45, was daughter of Blissfield residents Fred and Mrs Schultz. The Holmes had moved from Detroit to Blissfield and had left for vacation August 2 with a return planned around August 17 or 18.

Princess Elizabeth to marry Mountbatten without trousseau

London August 18 Princess Elizabeth will marry Lt Philip Mountbatten on November 20 at Westminster Abbey with no trousseau due to austerity and current conditions. She selected a Normal Hartnell wedding dress design, the palace announced.

Army Will Conduct Hearing on Charges Against Gen. Lee

The army plans a grand jury like hearing into morale under Lt. Gen. John C. H. Lee, commander of the Mediterranean theater. Eisenhower said Maj. Gen. Ira T. Wyche will likely lead the inquiry, which could take ten days to two weeks, following articles by Robert C. Ruark. Lee called the reports unwarranted and distorted and welcomed inspection by the army and press.

Rubber workers settle for six paid holidays

Aug 18 the Clinton Machine Co resumed production of small gasoline motors for lawn mowers and scooters as the House labor committee announced an inquiry into Clinton labor conditions. Kenny Holmboe the 14 year old from Charleston West Virginia won the national junior soapbox derby title at Derby Downs Akron with a 26.7 second 975 foot run.
