Whitehaven England Aug 16 A blast in the undersea Wil Nam mine trapped 117 workers two miles out under the Irish Sea. Ten escaped and 16 bodies were found as rescue crews battled rock falls. The National Coal Board marked 54 bodies recovered and said little hope remains for 50 others entombed.

80 000 New Houses Started in July Set Records

Washington reports private contractors began work on 80 000 new houses in July, breaking 20‑year records and nearing 1925 highs. Seven month total up 38 300 units. 441 000 houses started for the year. Completion 65 700 in July, expenditures 421.9 million dollars.

Chrysler ups car prices by 45 to 143 dollars

Chrysler Corp announced price increases on passenger cars and trucks effective August 18, following similar moves by General Motors, Packard, Hudson, Kaiser-Fraser, and Nash-Kelvinator. In Chicago a 24 year old bride was granted divorce on cruelty grounds after she testified she gained 55 pounds from a steady diet of spaghetti and pork pushed by her husband since their November wedding.
