New York August 9 film industry leaders announce immediate suspension of all feature and short films to Britain in retaliation for a new British tax aimed at easing dollar shortage. The MPA estimates Britains levy would slash American film earnings by about 75 percent, with about 68 million dollars previously earned abroad now largely redirected.

Costello Named Superintendent at Boys Vocational School

John B. Costello age 37 from Elmira Heights is named superintendent of the troubled Boys Vocational School in Lansing. Appointed by the State Social Welfare Commission, he will assume duties Sept 1, coming from assistant director at the New York State Department of Corrections Reception and Classifications Center.

Probe into Immoralities at Two Michigan Reform Schools

Detroit August 9 A probe into reported immoralities at the Boys Vocational School in Lansing and the Boys Republic at Farmington was begun by Michigan Attorney General Eugene F Black. An assistant was appointed to review statements from ten boys sent from Wayne County to the institutions.

Adrian Men Hurt As Car Rolls Over

Two Adrian men were injured at 2 a m when their car left the road and overturned on US 223 east of Rome Center. Jesse Dunn and Wilbur Fenicle were unconscious on arrival, both treated for cuts and bruises, car demolished. Deputy Harrington noted uncertain driver. both were taken to Bixby hospital. Later, four cars were involved in a freak crash at East Maumee and South Broad Streets. Rita Burns of 408 Division Street cited for not having her car under control after colliding with parked cars and Miss Pearl Stadler’s car. Burns pled guilty and paid $5 fine and costs.

Heat wave expands across central region into Great Lakes

A new heat wave from the Associated Press grows from Montana and the southern plains toward the Mississippi River and Rocky Mountains this afternoon and eastward tomorrow. Temperatures near and above 100 degrees will wither corn as the Midwest remains reeling from a prior four day hot spell. Adrian topped 87 with a 60 degree overnight low.

Eighteen states have ratified the proposed 22nd amendment limiting Presidents to two terms, done in under five months. It may be more than two years before 18 more states act unless many special legislative sessions are convened next year.

U S agents opened an intensive probe into the disappearance of 29 crown jewel pieces valued at two million dollars from a 95 piece collection once owned by Princess Hermine and linked to Kaiser Wilhelm I. The jewels were smuggled from the Russian occupied zone and a woman linked to Prince Ferdinand is suspected.

TETERBORO N J Aug 9 UP A pair of tiny single engine planes piloted by former army flyers took off on a 21350 mile flight around the world the first such circuit by planes under 575 horsepower The 100 horsepower Cubs led off at 1010 a m EST with a two minute gap The pilots George Truman 39 of Los Angeles a former army flight instructor and Clifford W Evans 26 of Washington DC who served in the China Burma India theater in the war expect a 200 to 220 flying hour mission lasting 30 to 45 days.

Increase in living costs across eight Michigan cities

Lansing records the largest quarterly rise in living costs at 2.6 per cent from March 15 to June 15, with Battle Creek 1.7 per cent higher and Detroit Saginaw and Bay City at 1.4 per cent. Grand Rapids shows no change while Flint up 0.7 per cent and Marquette 0.3 per cent. The year to June 15 marks a 15.9 per cent rise since last year.

Berlin Aug 9 The U S military government plans a decentralized economy for Germany with many small unregimented firms as the model for productivity. Lloyd V Steere acting director of the U S office of political affairs told Germans in a radio broadcast that 31,400,000 small businesses under competitive system supply 98 percent of U S firms. He argued benefits spread to all social groups and cited global gains from American farm and factory output.

Twins Gather For Fun In Columbus

In Columbus Ohio 150 pairs of twins gathered for the 13th annual International Twins Association convention. Vast Brush Fire Is Under Control

A major brush fire in Big Tujunga canyon near Los Angeles burned nearly 4000 acres along a 16 mile front. More than 1000 firefighters remained on duty as the blaze, which began last Tuesday, was finally controlled the previous day. Three deaths were reported including two firefighters and an elderly resident who died of a heart attack. About 200 firefighters suffered injuries, mostly minor burns.

In Brisbane on Aug 9 British carrier Glory and Theseus canceled flying drills after seven sailors died and seven planes were destroyed in crashes since July 20. Officials blamed pilot inexperience for the accidents and the reduction in practice.

President Truman Relaxes at Shangri La in Maryland

President Truman enjoys a quiet weekend at Shangri La near Thurmont Maryland. He completed 194 last day bills, hikes swims and reads at the Catoctin Mountain retreat with Mrs Truman and a secret service detail. No staff or newsmen accompany him, and no visitors are expected while he stays through Monday. Shangri La, once Navy wartime hideaway for Roosevelt, features rustic trails and an outdoor pool.

Mass of Dead Fish Spoils Some Beaches

Clearwater Florida reports a fish plague along the gulf coast killing fish by the tons. Patches of dead fish drift ashore at Indian Rocks Beach and other shores, sparking odors and tourist cancellations. Boy 13 Nearly Escapes When Clothes Caught in Wheel Shaft

Addison Milling Co. incident at 4 30 p m yesterday left James Decker 13 uninjured aside from scalp lacerations and bruises after his clothes were ripped from his body by a water wheel shaft. Britain to end double summer time tomorrow

London reports Britain will revert from double summer time to standard daylight saving time tomorrow six hours ahead of East Lan Standard Time. The change ends the extra hour of daylight in the evenings and returns clocks to the standard DST schedule.
