Lenawee County elects first rural education board

A former county school commissioner, a banker, and three farmers campaigned at the Lenawee county court house to form the first county board of education. Five members will serve staggered six and four year terms, representing diverse townships and including Adrian city.

Heat Wave Burdens Adrian And Michigan Area

The heat continued across Michigan with Adrian reporting 99.5 degrees yesterday afternoon the warmest since July 19 1946 while Pellston 97 Traverse City 96 Jackson 94 and Alpena 76. Other cities faced higher temperatures as far south as Chicago and Memphis saw readings above 100. An incoming cold front from Canada was forecast to lower temperatures tonight.

Milk Ordinance Adopted in Adrian by City Commission

Gerity Michigan Die Casting Company buys part of the former Brown Fence and Wire complex at Michigan Street and Wabash Avenue, adding about 80 000 square feet across three brick and two frame buildings. A Wabash railroad spur enhances shipping, frontage on Michigan Street spans 375 feet, and offices will move to the new site freeing space at Beecher Street. The firm operates plants in Detroit and Adrian and is a leading independent plating and bathroom fixture concern with a large order backlog.

Six Year Old Breaks Leg After Running Into Car

Barbara Shourds six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald Shourds of Rome Center suffered a broken right leg and bruises when she ran into a car on US 223 in Rome Center yesterday at 1250 pm. She crossed from south to north side after waiting for an east bound car and struck a west bound car driven by Henry Sullivan of Rochester NY. The injured girl was taken to Bixby hospital and is expected to be discharged today.

Too Many Amateur Pickpockets Lament by Jap Officer

TOKYO Aug. 5 A Japanese police officer complains that pickpocketing has shifted from skilled operators to amateurs such as demobilized soldiers and the unemployed. Tokyo police caught 159 pickpockets in the month long contest, including four women, with ten individual winners to be announced Aug. 10. The officer says it was a hard contest and recalls the days of more polished criminals.

Adrian merchants voted 30 to 4 to extend Thursday afternoon closings for a year from Sept 1 1947 to Sept 1 1948. Montgomery Ward disagreed citing national policy of no afternoon closings. Taft Hartley pact averts Ford UAW strike in delay

Detroit Aug 5 United Auto Workers and Ford Motor Co reached an eleventh hour agreement under Taft Hartley to avert a 107000 strong walkout. The pact grants the union a one year protection from damage suits under the law as talks on remaining issues including a pension plan proceed. Ford and UAW will form a joint study group to resolve liability questions and potential strike rights beyond the year.
