Police and firemen pressed for higher pay while the Adrian city commission reviews the budget. A tentative 2.45 percent raise for police, fire, and other workers was discussed as costs rise with fringe benefits and preservation needs.
Tecumseh police arrested 18 year old babysitter Ladonna T Oswald at her home after a complaint by Mrs Vandecar. A 2 1 2 year old boy and his four year old brother were beaten with a whip leaving welts on the younger child. Oswald, married with no children, was jailed on a charge of assault and battery after an alleged 7 p m to 3 30 p m Friday incident. Thomas E Vandecar 31 of Tecumseh was also jailed for assault and battery following a wife and police complaint.
Clayton M. Morgan named valedictorian of Adrian High School senior class. Patricia Hughes earns salutatorian honors with perfect attendance and strong math talents. Morgan. activities include Junior Varsity sports, Co-Op Club, Biology and Latin, Future Teachers Association, and National Merit Test commendation. He plans Adrian College in business and teaching. Hughes serves as Biology Club treasurer, homeroom secretary, Girls Athletic Association member, French Club former treasurer, Future Teachers Association, and hall of fame candidate. She will attend Adrian College in the fall and works part time at The Telegram business office.
The county commission announced that 140000 from the asphalt paying fund will fix broken roads. Some roads like Medina Rome Beecher Egan and Sand Creek will be sealed, others will be gravelled. Over 12 miles of former blacktopped roads will be buried with gravel to form a base for future paving.
French President De Gaulle began a Caribbean tour after a U S visit. Adrian city administrator Robert Finley and his family faced repeated car breakdowns on trips to Harrisburg from April 14. Mechanics found fuel tank issues caused by cardboard packing used to test the pump, leading to failures especially on hills. The incident was reported to the Adrian police for investigation.

Police treat the incident as a routine runaway case as her mother and ex husband await word. Corporal Maurice I. Tubbs transferred and promoted to corporal at Bay City after service in Travarse City.
About 1,000 students marched near the unfinished NATO building in Istanbul defying martial law bans as tanks and helicopters watched. Earlier 2,000 sitdown strikers from Istanbul University were removed by troops, with students interned and charged with violating martial law rules.
Cait Fuller of Toledo vice president of the Kroger Company visited Adrian College on Friday. He presented a $2,000 check to the Michigan College Foundation and another payment for science equipment for Miles Peelle Hall of Science set to open in the fall. Attending were James Banasiak of Kroger and Robert Rinkmann, company performer director.
Michigan State University professor Bagwell announced his bid for governor at a Lansing event before about 1,800 supporters. He pledged to campaign across the state be beholden to no special group and not the big business interests, promising to run “from border to border” through all counties.
