City commissioners tentatively raised the industrial development fund from 2000 to 5000 dollars citing serious local needs. The measure, part of the tentative budget for the next year, limits use to advertising and travel. A public hearing and later adoption by the second week of May are planned.
Carl Rosman of the National Society of Industrial Realtors told the Adrian Industrial Development Committee that the Bridgeport Brass Co plant is marketable and urged a six month push to attract a single owner. If unsuccessful, consider dividing the plant by weight divisions for other industries. He suggested using three brokers in Detroit Chicago and Adrian to handle the sale.
In Shamokin area, dynamite dealer Lester J. Honicker is missing and presumed dead after a magazine blast near Bear Gap. Police found four craters where the 20 by 20 concrete block magazine stood. a truck was ripped to pieces, debris flew up to a half mile. Honicker ran explosives sales for about 20 years and was typically at the site when the blast occurred.
Nan ny Pfau 23 of Kalamazoo pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of her grandmother Mrs. Fulah Webb. Pfau was free on 1500 dollar bond awaiting sentencing set for May 16. The struggle occurred during an argument at the grandmother’s home in Parchment and Webb died March 20.
The Air Force successfully fired a Titan missile along a 500 mile course for the third time and will focus on range reliability and security. A 98 foot missile covered the distance yesterday and dropped its nose cone in the impact zone off Ascension Island in the South Atlantic.
UCATUR Michigan chief of the Interman police force resigns amid a parking ticket controversy. Miller says he quit to avoid being mocked for forwarding tickets to Michigan Gas Co. vehicles. Police Commissioner Beardsley says the action followed a village policy allowing concessions for loading zone issues. A special board meeting is planned to address the dispute.
Former Premier Y. T. Pyun urged President Sungman Rhee to discard Vice President elect Lee Ki-poong amid anti government protests in Inchon and Seoul. Pyun said Rhee has a plan to resolve the political crisis as tens of thousands of students rioted without bloodshed in Inchon. Martial law was imposed in several cities after a deadly near revolt.
The Civil Aeronautics Board will review money problems at Capital Airlines, the nation’s fifth largest, and demand a 45 day report on finances. The inquiry may consider a $13 million annual subsidy, route transfers, or mergers. Capital aims to meet with Vickers-Armstrongs to avert foreclosure on its airplanes while cutting officer salaries by at least ten percent.
Oscar L Woods, 30, died in a Monroe house fire ruled accidental. Police say he apparently fell asleep while smoking, as flames swept through his residence.
The board of supervisors unanimously accepted the equalization report showing an 18 million dollar drop in county value and agreed to take 5 mills in taxes for 1961. The decrease is expected to cut county taxes by about 100000 dollars. There is progress in narrowing the gap between local assessed and state equalized figures from 59.5% to 68.4%. The finance chair said 32 mills will be needed again in 1961, marking the first no-raise year in three. The meeting also addressed sewage concerns at Devily and Round lakes with no action taken, health officials warning of possible posting or condemnation if unresolved, risking drop in property values and tax receipts. The board adjourned to May 11 with a Lenawee county district association meeting planned.
Beloit Wisconsin reports a spring water fight at Beloit College’s fraternity row erupted into a mudslinging melee. Police used tear gas to restore order as four students were taken into custody and two police cars sustained damage. Captain Bjorklund called the incident the worst he has seen and warned of possible injuries from the irresponsible actions.
A Sobelaiy Airlines DC4 crashed near the summit of a mountain at Bogor near Bunia in the Belgian Congo killing all 35 aboard. Of the dead, 28 were passengers and 7 crew, with a Belgian majority and possibly one German woman aboard. The plane was bound for Bunia near Lake Albert. In Michigan, Virginia Strohm, 33, of Greilickville, was convicted of manslaughter in the drowning death of her 22 month old son, Fel. The court ordered pre sentence detention for the mother. In Tennessee, Sue Thomas Tipton, 13, filed for divorce from Eddie Lee Tipton, 19, alleging marriage in 1959 and separation last month, seeking non support and cruel treatment.
President Charles de Gaulle arrives in Washington for talks with President Eisenhower ahead of a summit. Eisenhower greets de Gaulle at National Airport with a military salute and a parade. The couple heads to the guest house near the White House as flags line the route. De Gaulle, on a four day state visit, travels to New York San Francisco and New Orleans after Washington. This is his first U.S. visit in 15 years.
Dr Harvey E B Brazer of the University of Michigan outlines a three point tax reform to ease burdens on industry and fund communities. He suggests dual personal property taxes on machinery and inventories a half cent sales tax increase with proceeds returned to origin communities and a one percent income tax added to the state rate with returns to communities of origin. Brazer notes rising local government costs and property tax yields, says property taxes on machinery and inventories hit industry hardest and distribution favors rural areas.
State police at Clinton said a reported theft from the Austin Partridge barn on Occidental Highway around 4:15 p.m. Thursday was a communication breakdown. Owner William Raper had taken his horse. the Patridge horse could not be located until troopers were notified.
Two 17-year old youths were sentenced by Circuit Judge Rex Martin to Camp Pugsley in northern Michigan for probation violations and burglary crimes. Bobby L. Coleman and Elvin Dale Morgan received three years probation and restitution plus court costs of 150 dollars. their probation terms include up to one year at the camp and later completion on probation.
Prince Willman and David L. Jones, both University of Colorado students, died after a spring blizzard trapped them and a female companion on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. Jane Bendixen survived frostbite and was treated in Boulder. Rescue crews struggled at 13,000 feet as a Lowry Air Force Base helicopter planned a rescue attempt.
The Michigan state board of mortuary science suspended for two days the Stanley J. Leschick Funeral Home of Detroit after finding cut rate funeral advertising false. The board secretary said Leschick claimed lower prices in Detroit papers which did not exist, justifying the license suspension to protect customers.
Police separate Negroes and whites as Ku Klux Klan disrupts a converted brick store night vigil in Macon. Hundreds watch the orderly anti segregation demonstrations in Atlanta Greensboro and Raleigh with sit in protests at Rich's department store and a lunch counter. Police arrest 45 students and two whites for refusing to leave a lunch counter. eight Negro college students are fined and sentenced for sit ins, all appealing and freed on bond as new peace disturbance laws take effect.
Foreign aid critics aim to trim about 1.5 billion from the 84.0385 billion program approved by the House. Chairman Ott E. Passman says the subcommittee may approve no more than about 2.5 billion in cuts. The bill passed 243 to 130, setting a spending maximum and policy guidelines, with authorization cutting 1364 million from Eisenhower's recommendations.
