Gallage boys in bis scrap ends with freshmen beating sophomores 62 to 26 in the tie up after a ten-minute clash at Nixon Field. Earlier the second-year class won the tug of war 66 to 62, as twenty men strained to pull opponents over the line with no disqualifications.
A Saturday afternoon collision at the Springs avenue West Confeder ate avenue curve left no injuries. Miss Anna Gilliland drove a new Buick that struck Holtzworth and Hoffman's three seated wagon, breaking the front axle and bending the fender while seven or eight spokes were knocked from the wheel. James Weaver, driving the wagon, finished the trip after obtaining a replacement.
Harrisburg couple Elmer S Stalnecker and Miss Mary Strang announced their marriage this week. On Sept 25, 1912, they eloped from Gettysburg to Hagerstown where Rev. E K Thomas of the First Baptist Church officiated. The groom works at the Philadelphia and Reading station news stand in Harrisburg.
Walter Cullison of West High street and Martha Myers of Bonneauville were wed Tuesday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran Church parsonage in Hagerstown, officiated by Rev. S. W. Owen. Blaine Widder of West Middle street departs for Philadelphia to begin architectural drawing studies at Drexel Institute.
Miss Anna A. Fox will lead the new domestic science course at Gettysburg High School this week. The well equipped room on the second floor includes twenty tables with bread boards and gas ranges, glass storage cabinets, and a central sewing area. The project benefited from Allen B. Plank’s donation of ranges and local carpenters’ efforts, saving about $100.
Harry J Carbaugh, 27, a farmer from Freedom township, died suddenly in his barn at about 6 am Monday while finishing hay carriages. He leaves his mother Mrs William Carbaugh, his wife, two brothers, and a sister, with funeral services at 9 30 am Wednesday and burial in Evergreen Cemetery Gettysburg.
Carlisle area clergy move to curb divorce by urging ministers to refuse marrying divorced individuals. A committee will ask the county clerk to mark on licenses if either party has been divorced, though state law does not require this. An additional committee will seek clergy support across Cumberland County and potentially the state.

Seminary opened for another year with 46 students, 20 new. Opening services at 10 AM featured welcome by Dr. J A Singmaster and main address by Dr. T C Billheimer. Out of town ministers and graduates attended. Classes: Juniors 20 Middlers 18 Seniors 8. Summer improvements include a new cement walk from Springs Avenue to the West Confederate dormitory, replacing the old cinder path.
Mrs. Raymond Stonesifer of near Union Mills Carroll County fell while descending with a lighted lamp at about 4 am Thursday. She was struck on the head by a vertigo induced fall, leaving her unconscious with a fractured left arm above the wrist and facial and arm cuts. Dr G Lewis Wetzel of Union Mills treated her promptly. Latest reports say her condition remains serious.
George W. Weikert has sold his 55 acre farm near Mc Knightstown to Walter Settle for 3250 dollars. Mrs Clyde Mumper of Baltimore street visits Philadelphia for a week with friends. Mr and Mrs Huber Miller and daughter Margaret of Baltimore street stay with friends in Harrisburg.
At a county court session Charles Peterson received a twelve month probation in a veterinary practice without a license. John H Jones was jailed thirty days for interfering with an officer during a fight at Western Maryland station. Judge Swope gave Mrs Nellie Cason a divorce on desertion grounds and Henry Moul with C L Livingston were named school directors for six years in Conewago Independent District. The Mary C air estate’s first account was confirmed absolute and all advertised accounts were confirmed. The Butler Township road case was argued with decision reserved.
The last marker for Stewart's Battery was finished Monday under the National Park Commission. It replicates the granite and bronze design and sits along Chambersburg Pike marking the battery's position on July 1. The inscription records its advance to Seminary Ridge, subsequent actions, and casualties totaling 36. Another tablet stands on the Baltimore Pike.
A false alarm of fire rang at 7 20 Friday evening when a reflective red light on the railroad near the flour mill on Pranklin street was mistaken for fire. A passerby unknown to us activated the alarm after seeing the signal line with the mill. Fire equipment went out quickly and firemen arrived in minutes. The area resembled a busy scene reminiscent of summer celebrations. The mill had suffered a real fire and damage a few weeks earlier.
The annual YMCA reception for new college students was held in Glatfelter Hall on Friday evening. The college band played and a display of spirit and enthusiasm filled the event. Prof. Wentz presided as speeches were given by President Granville, Harry Beidelman, Coach Mauthe, Dr. Stahley, Prof. Sanders and Prof. Smith. Refreshments were served and the affair was as enjoyable as past years.
County Superintendent Roth receives many suggestions for the fiftieth anniversary observance of Lincoln s Gettysburg Address. Residents recall hearing Lincoln with Mrs Louisa Wisler of Cumberland township among those likely to attend. Others include James Weaver and Drs Billheimer and Bible. Possible speakers are Clark E Carr of Galesburg and Mrs Christian author of The Perfect Tribute.
Gettysburg audiences enjoyed a first class production of Within the Law on Monday night. Lead actress Aline McDermott as Mary Turner drew praise for a faultless interpretation while Oliver Hindsdell as Eddie Griggs impressed as the stool pigeon. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity presented roses to McDermott and later hosted the cast in the Star and Sentinel building on Baltimore Street.
Bids for the new federal building showed Darby and Pierce as the low bidder at just over $30,000. The contract is not yet awarded. if their bid is satisfactory they will have five months to complete the work or until about March first. Darby and Pierce previously erected all temporary buildings for the fiftieth anniversary camp.
Coroner's jury in York found Western Maryland Railroad lacked adequate protection at the grade crossing where the death occurred. The evidence showed crossing bells did not ring.
Clarence Blubaugh, son of Irvin Blubaugh, unearthed a large Spanish silver coin while plowing at his father's farm near Tomstown. The coin carries Carotua III Del Gratia 1797 on one side and claims the king presides over Spain and India on the other. It is said to be as large as a silver dollar and has a drilled hole through its rim.
Town council held a Friday session to consider purchasing an automobile combination water and chemical fire engine priced between six thousand and thirty six hundred dollars. Favor appeared likely if half the cost could be raised by subscriptions, with initial support from the Howe Company and potential county and private donors. No final action was taken, but steps toward financing the plan were anticipated.
Golda Webb celebrated her thirteenth birthday with a surprise party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Webb in Bendersville on Tuesday. The evening included refreshments and a gathering of friends and relatives listed among attendees.
