Clouds hung over Hanover Fair as opening day drew a small crowd after a shower. Midway attractions faced late arrivals or absence while authorities closed several games of chance for regulation. The main building filled, 100 Catholic orphanage children attended, and racing was shortened. Three year old colt Joe Promise, owned by H M Eldridge of York, won both heats in a dramatic finish. Doc Elia won the two year old colt event, with John L H Miller of Hanover close behind. Lions, trained acts, and a comedy roller skating act drew applause on the quarter stretch.

L. L. Monroe aged 55 years 7 months 24 days died at his West street home after a yearlong decline. He left a Pittsburgh mother Mrs Clementine Gilbert two brothers six children including sons John H Louis E and Z G and daughters Mrs H C Brant Anna and Clementine. He was a longtime chef at the Eagle Hotel for eight years and remained so under recent management.

Guides Fined For Soliciting Tourists Near Curb Line
Samuel Vaughn and James Weikert paid a 10.30 fine plus costs at a hearing before Squire Hill for violating borough rules by soliciting tourists more than two feet from the curb. Officer Emmons filed the complaint after a Sept 6 incident at the Western Maryland station. Witnesses included Emmons, Vaughn, Arthur Vaughn, Shearer, Plank, and Bair. An artesian well 200 feet deep has been dug at York Springs Creamery by Kohl Brothers of Myerstown. At 150 feet a 14 foot vein of black rock resembling coal was found. Samples sent to Harrisburg for analysis. Water abundance at 195 feet caused a gush at 65 gallons per minute.

Refuse Pardons For Eyler In Adams County Case
William Eyler, convicted of first degree murder in Adams County, was denied further consideration for a pardon by the Board of Pardons. Advocates led by Rev. Kenneth M. Craig urged mercy, citing repentance and conversion, but board members cited the case as one of the region’s most horrible murders and upheld the life sentence. District Attorney John D. George Richard Harman of Shippensburg died suddenly Monday afternoon at 5 30. He was born near York Springs and married Martha A Danner in 1866. Survived by wife and children J L Reigle and W F Harman of Baltimore H W and C W of Shippensburg. One sister Nancy Irvin of Idaville. Harman moved to Shippensburg from Huntsdale in 1892.
