College Senior Weds in Morgantown in 1918

The Fairmont Times reports florist H W Leaman’s son J Enfield Leaman married Esther Ruth Taylor of Maple West Virginia. The ceremony took place at the Methodist parsonage in Morgantown on Friday September 5 1918 conducted by Rev C K Jennies D D. Leaman was a college senior. Verna Speese and sister are visiting in Chambersburg. Mrs Margaret Cassell of West Wainster Md has returned home after visiting Frank Mitten and family.

Fruit Growers Held Sessions in Adams County

About 150 fruit growers and orchardists from across the state and guests attended Wednesday sessions in Brug Chapel. C J Tyson, Dean Watts, F N Fagan, and H A Surface spoke on cultivation, labor management, and marketing. Evening talks by R G Phillips and A G Borden addressed the middleman, advertising apples, and industry trends.

Gettysburg Plans 50th Lincoln Address Anniversary

Adams County teachers institute plans a commemorative observance in Gettysburg for the 50th anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Superintendent Roth solicits ideas and urges those who heard the speech to contact The Gettysburg Times. An afternoon program may be held at the Lincoln Address monument in the National Cemetery if weather allows.

Doctors Meet Adams County Medical Society Meeting

The Adams County Medical Society was entertained by Dr. E W O Cashman of York Springs on Tuesday with members Drs O Neal Hartman and Dalbey from Gettysburg and others including Beat Woomer McKnightstown Miller Abbottstown Seiss New Oxford Elgin East Berlin Trout Fairfield Leh Hampton and C L Myers of York Springs. Dinner followed at the York Springs Hotel and a business session addressed issues of importance to the medical profession.

Veterinarian Charged Without License in Brushtown Case

Acting on instruction from the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, Dr. E. D. Hudson filed charges against Chas. Peterson for practicing veterinary medicine without a license. Constable Wilson served the warrant. Peterson waived a hearing and will appear in court. He reportedly admits guilt. His operations were mainly in Brushtown and nearby areas where he had previously worked on state highway projects.

Held for Court in Interfering with an Officer Charge

John Jones, colored, was given a hearing before Squire Harnish and held for Court on a charge of interfering with an officer. Jones was part of a crowd that rushed at Officer Emmons during the arrest of another man at the Western Maryland station amid Monday excursion activities.

Freshmen Hazing Marks Gettysburg College Night

Opening night at Gettysburg College featured freshmen humbling tasks and stunts around the campus lamp post. Upperclassmen orchestrated posters, name spells, singing tests, and paddle activities while a sophomores’ follow‑up ran with pep talks and name‑calling. A joy ride ended with a car left at a lamp post and later returned to its owner.

Long Term Gauger Sentenced for Horse Theft Near Craigheads

Sharon Gauger stole a horse and buggy from Ludt and McCoy near Craigheads station. Captured after a mountain chase by Officer Dagwall of Waynesboro, she was sentenced in Cumberland County Court to fines and prison terms totaling up to 12 years. John Toms fled custody during the chase but escaped.

Miss Sarah Reed Dies at 86 in Fairfield

Miss Sarah Reed died at her Fairfield home Wednesday noon at age 86 years 5 months 15 days. Her sister Eliza B. Reed died September 1. She is survived by brothers William T. Reed and Charles M. Reed of Hamiltonian township. Funeral services Friday at 3:30 AM at the house with interment at Lower Marsh Creek cemetery.

Turnpike Property Sales Near Cashtown and MecNightstown

On Wednesday the Chambersburg and Petersburg Turnpike Company sold property in Cashtown to George W. Schwartz for 525 dollars the house at McKnightstown to John Lower for 850 dollars and a vacant lot in Mecnightstown to Calvin Cluck for 187 50 dollars.

Serious Fall Injures Mrs. Murray Smiley in Chambersburg

Mrs. J. Murray Smiley lies seriously ill at her Chambersburg home after a fall from stairs while carrying a small ice box. She tripped on the stair and sprained ligaments, with the box corner cutting to the bone of her left leg.

A Different Scheme

The Waynesboro Herald comments General Meade lacked counsel from today’s military critics, suggesting he might have defeated General Lee’s army at Gettysburg. It questions what Carlisle hotel keepers would have said to such a plan and mocks the notion.
