College Opens for 81st Year at Gettysburg College
Gettysburg College opened its eighty first academic year with the largest enrollment in its history. The Freshman class reached around one hundred, with total enrollment surpassing any previous opening. President Granville delivered the opening address urging ambition, hard work, and high ideals, stressing education as a responsibility and the pursuit of knowledge across science, history, art, and literature.

West Chester State Normal School Chief Resigns After Board Vote

Apple Belt Tour Highlights Adams County Orchard Visit
The Pennsylvania State Horticultural Society held its summer meeting with a forty mile auto tour through Adams County apple belts. Thirty-one cars carried 141 passengers visiting Mummasburg, Breams, Prickett, and Tyson Brothers orchards, viewing York apples and a 160-tree experimental plot. A noon meal at Adams County Fruit Growers Hall followed, with praise for York Imperial crops and local orchard work.

Bosserman Dies in Harrisburg Insane Asylum
Joan Bosserman of East Berlin died in the Harrisburg insane asylum three days after fatally wounding Cornelius Baker. He attacked John Butt and Nathaniel Haker on August 26, 1908, was overpowered, then confined. He leaves a brother Chester and sister Alice V. Bosserman of York. interment at Mummerv's Meeting House near East Berlin.

Andrew Jackson Dies in York Colorful Resident Remembered
Andrew Jackson a well known colored resident of York died of old age at his home on Wednesday night. His body was brought to town this morning by train with Rev. B. M. Ward and friends for interment at the colored cemetery. He had long served as head porter at the York railroad station.

Bedford Gazette Editor Samuel Van Ormer Found Dead
Samuel A. Van Ormer editor and owner of the Bedford Gazette was found dead beside his overturned automobile Thursday morning near Schellsburg nine miles west of Altoona. He was driving alone and the cause of the accident has not been determined. Van Ormer graduated from Gettysburg College in 1901 and had many friends here.
