Lanny Ashley, 17, won the National High School Cutting Horse Championship in Twin Falls Idaho after competing against 63 entrants from 24 states earning a trophy and a new saddle. Rhonda 15 was senior division all around cowgirl at Pontotoc County Fair. Larjn 8 tied for first all around cowboy junior division on a Shetland. Mark 10 placed in four divisions in the fair horse performance show.
Drought hits cattle ranch profits in 1970 study
Washington AP reports a government study by the Economic Research Service showing drought reduced ranch profits in a 4-county West Texas southern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona area. Average net returns fell 18 percent to 10030 dollars per ranch as herd size and calf outputs declined and feed costs rose.

Murray State Names Teacher Of The Year Katy Rood
Mrs. Katy Rood language arts instructor at Murray State College has been named Teacher Of The Year and will compete for Oklahoma Teacher of the Year. She joined Murray in 1964 after teaching in Madill ISD, teaching English composition literature Spanish and developmental reading.

Women on farms toil beside husbands says AP report
A 1966 based Agriculture Department study shows farm wives average 21 hours weekly in actual farm work in addition to house chores. Across farm sizes, hours vary from 22 to 61 weekly, with tobacco and poultry farms showing 40 hour norms for regular workers. Dairy farms see long weeks with farmers and hired labor, while many farm firms lose workers to nonfarm industry. The report notes middleman costs slowed food delivery to consumers with farmers earning 38 cents of each dollar spent at retail, in August, while middlemen kept $779 unchanged from July. The Nixon wage and price freeze will be reflected in a September Farm Prices report.

OU Plans For Carl Albert Day This Weekend
Norman Oklahoma AP The University of Oklahoma will host Carl Albert former U S House Speaker for Carl Albert Day starting with a luncheon in the Oklahoma Memorial Union in his honor before the Oklahoma Southern California football game and ending with a rally and reception. Albert a straight A student at OU Phi Beta Kappa and Rhodes Scholar graduated in 1931 and served as student body president and won a national oratorical championship while at OU.
Barley Added to 1972 Feed Grain Program
Official Gene Maley notes barley is included in the 1972 feed grain program after being excluded in 1971. An acreage set aside of 20 to 35 percent of barley base will apply, with exact rates announced by the USDA later. Substitution permits allow farmers to swap to a different crop while preserving history and allotments where applicable.
