Ada industries shift to gas as fuel with Pontotoc gin the first to gin cotton using gas. Other gins, a oil mill, OK Cement Co boilers, ice factory and electric plant adopt gas. MacThwaite wells tested. city piping may start if results meet expectations. third well drilling continues with expected supply increase soon.
I. T. Harrell of Ada reports Dave Reynolds on his rural route feeds him a fine yellow corn. Reynolds expects 40 to 45 bushels per acre from 25 acres of bottom corn. Harrell notes Reynolds kept the ground loose and persisted through the driest part of summer to keep the crop going.
The statement notes the First State Bank of Vanoss has progressed from a modest start to a healthy, sizable bank. Duke Ayres offers a five ten and twenty five cent store stocking queensware glassware enamelware tinware hardware notions dry goods and more in a 5 10 25c format.
London reports a Berlin sourced dispatch stating the German Baltic Squadron of twenty nine units has fifteen ships in action. Unclear wording leaves whether fifteen ships are fit for service or engaged in operations along the coast or at sea. Earlier notices cited naval activity along the Swedish coast with no battle details.
Preparations are underway in El Reno Oklahoma for the national meeting of the Anti Horse Thief association to convene October 1 for a two day session. About 150 delegates from Arkansas Missouri Kansas Illinois Iowa New Mexico Colorado Nebraska are expected. Visitors will be taken on an interurban railway trip to the State Fair in Oklahoma City during the session.
Washington reports say the buy a bale movement boosts southern markets. Baltimore bankers will raise 1 million dollars to buy cotton at 10 cents per pound and hold it. Southern congressmen will seek acceptance of cotton in part payment of debts, backed by properly warehoused and insured cotton assets.
The Ada News reports it bought a bale of cotton at 16 cents this morning and will hold it off the market for the time being.
Reports from Paris and multiple bureaus describe a general battle along a northern and eastern front 100 miles long from Noyon to Laon and Ville. Japanese aircraft bombed German HQ and disrupted a wireless station while rains delay operations easing.
The Ada cotton market shows slow clarification with prices at eight cents on streets and eight and a half cents for round bales. Farmers hold bales for better prices while a few sales occur. 23 bales were ginned this week and some bought at ten cents by local buyers promoting a buy-a-bale movement.
W. O. Pratt reports about nine young men have signed up as members of the national guard company being organized locally. A preliminary organization will be formed at a Thursday meeting and the new company will muster into service as soon as possible. Ada is currently the only sizable school town in the state without such a company.
The Busch estate of St. Louis plans to buy 100000 dollars of distressed cotton to hold off the market. A telegram to its Dallas local representative outlines the strategy.
A Frisco passenger train from St Louis to Texas bound routes hit a washout at Goodwin Hollow near Lebanon. At least 45 passengers believed dead or missing. thirteen injured hospitalized. Cloudburst washed away embankment twelve feet deep, two Pullmans derailed but passengers unharmed. A relief train was sent but washouts hinder progress.
United Press reports that railroads plan new applications to raise freight and passenger rates. Western carriers not involved in the five percent case will also request higher charges.
A chapel program at Normal commemorated the centennial of The Star Spangled Banner. Prof. E. C. Wilson sketched the song’s origin and Prof. Haskinson directed music. A trombone solo and other numbers preceded a final sing of the anthem. Enrollment rose from 229 to 253 as the second week opened.
The buy a bale campaign starts in Ada with Gwinn and Mays buying the first bale of the season to sell at 10c. J N Hammons of Union Hill supplied it and R W Simpson bought the second bale this morning. John C. Elliott was acquitted Saturday in district court on embezzlement charges in a guardianship case from Pauls Valley Free Lane. The outcome marks a clearance of a disputed matter involving guardianship and financial handling.
Dallas reports the Dallas Cotton Exchange reopened today as the first in the United States to do so. Spot cotton is quoted at 7 1/4 cents. Sales amount to several thousand bales.
Pontotoc County reports five bales of cotton ginned in 1914 prior to September, compared with 316 bales in 1913. F. C. Sims, Special Agent, Ada Oklahoma.
The plague has broken out at Catania in Sicily. The Italian government has taken extreme precautions to prevent its spread.
Paris reports German attack on the Aisne and near Rheims continues with French pursuit forcing a retreat. Antwerp notes Belgians repelling German lines for four days, inflicting heavy losses while blocking reinforcements to France. Count Van Der Gibletz proposal for Belgian peace is rejected.
Washington gossip notes major turnover as 114 new members enter this Congress and about 57 incumbents retire or are defeated. The piece highlights rising seniority for up-and-coming members and names several figures from Oklahoma Texas Ohio Arkansas Georgia and more as they anticipate chairmanships and promotions.
The Pontotoc county pig cotton and kafir clubs plan annual contests at Ada on Saturday. Six boys will show pigs ten will attend kafir and possibly 25 cotton. Events include pig judging at Casey wagon yard and kafir and cotton exhibits in East Main Street building near Brown & Coffman.
State Superintendent R H Mann reports 6745 common school diplomas issued this spring, the largest in state history, a 3020 increase from 1911. Diplomas grant entry to all state high schools and normal schools. Eleven diplomas of honor were issued for three consecutive years of attendance with no absences.
