In Garden City Kansas the cattle industry is undergoing a technological revolution with expanded feeding irrigation and high yield feed crops. Western Kansas about 50 000 square miles west of Wichita and Salina sits at the front of the change, aided by ample irrigation water and a climate suited to new ventures. Walt Hackney, a transplanted Towan managing a button operated meat packing plant, says the area will soon be among the world’s largest cattle feeding regions. The shift marks irrigation turning Western Kansas from a grain basket to a major cattle hub.
Washington AP reports the Agriculture Department projects the 1965 cotton crop at 8,332,000 bales, down 12 percent from last year. Production under government control aims to curb surpluses with underplanting payments. Planted area totals 5,724,000 acres, the smallest in a century, 6 percent below last year and 37 percent below the 1965-85 average.

The Pontotoc County ASC holds a convention on September 26, 1967 at 8 30 am in the RBA Building to elect farmer delegates and determine county committee roles for three year terms. Delegates vote by secret ballot to pick regular committee men and chair for the coming year.
Labor Department warns agribusiness will rely more on students for seasonal work as adult labor shifts to other jobs. Mechanization may offset some tasks but expands opportunities for student workers, with 650,900 students allegedly employed in July and August last year.
Rep. Tom Steed of Oklahoma says he has not decided whether to seek election in the newly drawn fourth district. He cites low name recognition and plans to study the race further, with a decision expected early next year. The redistricting act shifted Steed into largely new territory, amid prior criticism from supporters.

Dewayne Nelson, an East Central and Ada High graduate, becomes manager of the Sears store in Huntsville Texas. He studied business at East Central and earned his degree in 1967, played Cougar football and basketball, and previously worked for Sears in Ada since 1963. He is the son of Audie Nelson of Ada and is married to Sandra Wyatt of Ada.
Oklahoma expects record yields this year in sorghums, soybeans, all hay types, and pecans according to USDA statistician D. D. Pittman. Pecans hold at 48 million pounds, well above 1966 and the five year average, while broomcorn drops to an estimated 1,300 tons, still 7 percent above 1966.
